If we want to get into the technicalities of writing, then here's the basics:

I would say to think of punctuation, like periods (.) or commas (,) as the breaths you take while speaking. You speak a sentence, and then it ends in a period. That's the part where you end a line of thought. As you speak, though, these sentences tend to have sections. These would be separated by commas. Commas would separate parts of a sentence that would support the rest of the sentence. Consider the following:

"While Linda was running, she spotted a small, gray frog."

Now, I guess technically you can separate all the details into their own sentences:

"Linda was running one day. She spotted a frog. The frog was gray."

But notice how that's not as concise; it doesn't flow very well. Putting the phrases together in the sentence in their own little sections allows for a better flow without as many words.

Also notice what I did with the sentence prior to this one with the semicolon (;). The semicolon is essentially another way which you can add a supporting/clarifying statement that would put an idea into further perspective, kind of how a person would normally talk.

Now, there's way more technical shit that you ought to review when it comes to writing, and I'd recommend you read a lot, be it books, news articles, fanfics, or whichever way demonstrates the craft of writing in a proper fashion. Furthermore, look into resources online in order to help you understand this stuff a little more.

If you want to expand your vocabulary, doing a lot of reading will absolutely help with that, especially with classic books, like from John Steinbeck, who use the English language to its fullest extent.

Hope this helps some1

It takes time to learn this stuff, don't worry! I've been writing since sixth grade and i only recently started being half-decent at it (I'm a Junior in high school right now), so what I suggest is to try to make something, finish it, understand where your flaws lie, and try to do better on your next project.

Thank you so much!! I’ll gladly try & educate myself over time. I believe it is just the commas that i struggle with. But i’ll progress and hopefully make a better project than the last.
