how to managing a habit like a scientist!!

Intro

so, i just did a silly thing that works for me to keep the momentum of a new habit.

basically, you make an observation!! or make it looks like an experiment

i notice i'm a very curious fella and a lil bit knowledge hoarder. i always have a silly curiosity of "what will happen if i [do this]", and this is where this side of me playing role to keep the habits works.

i don't set goal, i set something like, "what will happen if i stop drinking coffee for 30 days?", and because it's still mystery what will happen to myself if i did that--it's enough to keep me doing the habit because i'm too curious what the outcome would be, and it's enough to make me not cancelling it in the midway because it makes the answer got delayed =w=))

i also keep a record to note what i feel when i'm doing the observation. basically, i put myself as the subject! this can be used as an act of distraction too. for example, if i feel the urge to do the negative habit, instead of engaging and fulfilling it--i just note how i feel about it.

like, i will write it down if i experiencing some sorts of withdrawal, some panic attack, or whatever when im starting to stop engaging to the negative etc etc. after all, its an observation of yourself! so you should take a note of what you feel about it. for me, it's fun to look back since i would be surprised to see how much my behavior has changed in the current week vs past week.

so, this is how i layout my observation habit. i just format it like an informal scientific paper, but you can make it formal if you want to!

Template

--- d a t e
start date:
end date:

--- 1. i n t r o d u c t i o n
[write why you wanna do this habit or the definition of the habit (background), what u should do/step by step to make the outcome, a method, or the question you wanna prove about this habit]

--- 2. d i s c u s s i o n
2.1 observation
2.1.1 week 1: [what happens on week 1 regarding to you and the habit]
2.1.2 week 2: [what happens on week 2 regarding to you and the habit, etc..]
2.1.3 week 3:
2.1.4 week 4:

2.2 result (optional)
2.2.1 before
2.2.2 after

--- 3. c o n c l u s i o n
[write the conclusion of the discussion, a summary, or answer the question you wanna prove in the introduction]

--- 4. r e f e r e n c e (optional)

Example

A. date, observation, conclusion example

observation_example

(minus week 4, its there but i cut the screenshot off. but u got an idea what i mean to say!)

B. introduction example

ps: i'm sorry if it's too messy to read =w=))/ english is not my main language- but tell me right away if it's hard to understand! i'll revise it :3

This sounds like a really fun thing to do! Plus I am almost 100% positive this is how scientists in 1800‘s operated. Except it wasn‘t about quitting sugar but "what happens if I brew mercury into my morning tea?"

Your option sounds safer, honestly <3

Sending love, XOXO, Rebeka
