they started in the netherlands from hardcore techno, which is basically REALLY fast music with heavy kicks and bass that makes ur chest vibrate. it’s not just loud music, it’s that intense feeling that kinda runs through ur whole body. For a lot of people it feels like pure freedom

with the sound came the dance called hakken, full of fast repetitive steps that match the crazy tempo, and it's so cool. If u see it for the first time u might think it looks weird ngl, but if u actually pay attention there’s this strong collective energy, like everyone’s locked into the same beat

and the look is part of it too. baggy sportswear, shaved heads, nike air max, that confident vibe. There are gabbers and gabberinas, everyone does it in their own way, but there’s always that strong presence

it’s not just fashion. It’s kinda a lifestyle built around intensity, friendship, and that feeling of belonging somewhere. U can’t fully get it just by reading about it, u have to feel it. once u start learning about hardcore and hakken, it’s almost inevitable that u’ll wanna dive deeper

it started mostly among working class youth in heavier industrial cities, and the music became a way to escape reality. a way to feel strong and part of something in the middle of a hard routine. there’s a bit of an anti-system energy to it, but it’s not really political, it’s more about unity and feeling everything intensely together

in the 90s a lot of people judged it and stereotypes were everywhere, but the culture didn’t die, it changed, now a new generation is rediscovering gabber, mixing the old aesthetic with a nostalgic vibe and even some underground fashion energy
