Films I've watched this year so far + my thoughts

I tried to watch a film everyday and failed pretty miserably BUT I have managed to watch quite a few films this year (probably not as many as somebody who's really into cinema, but enough for me) and I'm going to try and give my thoughts on them as succintly or elaborately as necessary. (❁´◡`❁)

1. Lars and the Real Girl:

Sad and hopeful all at the same time. I really like Ryan Gosling in this. Kind of a feel-good film but also pretty sad.

2. Secretary:

BDSM doesn't appeal to me whatsoever and I actively think it's pretty stupid (sorry) to want to be hurt or degraded during sex. James Spader and Maggie Gyllenhaal are both good actors but I didn't find this to be a particularly interesting film nor were any of the much-heralded scenes of eroticism/intimacy.

3. Children of Men:

Amazing. I love Julianne Moore. An interesting comment on the rigidity and insular nature of British society and how it punishes outsiders; a very pertinent watch.

4. Small Things Like These -

Extremely sad but I never had much time for the Catholic Church.

5. Wonka -

A good film that I'm too old for probably. Nice songs but TC was mostly sing-talking, which worked well in context. Lots of nostalgic British actors.

6. The Believer -

An excellent film willing to ask hard questions and self-interrogate. Ryan Gosling is, again, amazing in this, and it gets to the heart of all kinds of racism and supremasist belief.

7. Bottoms -

Almost funny? I don't know, something about it felt totally lacking. A comedy without many funny moments and the humour is already dated despite it only coming out a few years ago.

8. Red, White & Royal Blue -

Rewatched. A film that's incredibly funny to watch while drunk.

9. The Idea of You -

A film that's incredibly funny to watch while drunk.

10. Puss in Boots -

It's a kid's film, I don't know how to talk about it critically without sounding super pretentious and dumb. Watched with my mum.

11. Fargo -

Funny, dark, and kind of sweet with a strong cast and a good ending. Watched with my mum.

12. Pillion -

So disappointing! I expected this to be great but it let me down. Ray is sexually predatory and Colin abandons his mum at her time of need. The characters are so dismal, the mood is cloudy and unpleasant, and overall the 'com' aspect of 'dom-com' was completely lacking. I also thought it looked very bland and square.

13. Drive -

Ryan Gosling again. Watched with a friend. Simple and with a clear vision of itself. I was surprised by how much I liked it because I figured it would be very overbearing and ubermensch-ish.

14. Muriel's Wedding -

Rewatched. A nice, heartwarming 'literally me' sort of film. Toni Collette is so underrated.

15. Dogma -

Funny, cheap, and has a really strong cast. Lots of great moments disguising a slightly bizarre plot. Alanis Morrissette is God.

16. Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back -

It's a very three-star film with lots of cameos. Pre-MCU stupidity but I think Jay is so funny that I'll forgive it. Kevin Smith...We'll see.

17. Wuthering Heights -

Pretentious, unrelenting rubbish. Everything about it was either melodramatic or boring.

18. 13 going on 30 -

An odd plot...I wasn't sure what to make of it.

19. Good Will Hunting -

Rewatched. Amazing film.

Thanks for reading this far, love ya ヾ(@⌒ー⌒@)ノ
