OKII ENJOYYY!!! :D :D :D

The air was warm, and a breeze blew across your shoulders. It had been 2 weeks after you moved into your late grandfather’s old farm in a small town tucked away in a hidden valley, and you’re walking out to your crops to collect the summer’s first harvest.

Life before was straining, but now that you’ve been living off-grid for a few days the weight on your shoulders started to lift. Previous years, you’d spent summer in the Joja office, stuck in a muggy concrete building hunched over a laptop at the age of 16. Now, you’re wearing a red floral halter top and holding a soon to be filled woven basket. As you walk over to your crops, you walk past the chicken coop. Shit. You forgot to grab more hay before the week started. Guess those strawberries’ll have to wait.

You tread through the fields of overgrown grass to Marnie’s Ranch. She was a sweet old lady who had animals herself, and had a small farming business. Her ranch was just behind the cliffs bordering your farm, so you didn’t have to walk far. As you near the ranchhouse, you spot something in the corner of your eye. A…dog? It looked like a golden retriever from here, but you weren’t quite sure. Marnie’s shop wasn’t open yet, so you decide to check out what that thing is over by the beach. You’d always loved this town because even if you were deep in a forest, you’d still be near the water. As the thing by the shore slowly comes into view you realize it’s definitely not a dog, but a boy.

Huh? But you thought you’d already met all the townsfolk, who is this? Suddenly, he jerks his head towards you, and you jump back. “Oh! Uh sorry did I scare you? I didn’t mean to, I promise.” His hair was piecey  and was a shade of beautiful golden blonde. “Oh, no it’s totally okay, hah!” You reassure him because you didn’t want to be rude. You wanted to make a good first impression with everyone in town, but you have to admit that it did frighten you. “Hey, you’re that new farmer girl right?” He blurted out, but it wasn’t agitating. His voice was honeyed, which was surprising for a teenage boy. “Yeah haha, how’d you guess?” He looked you up and down from where he was sitting on the sand. “You’re wearing a straw hat and holding a basket.”

Wow. Blunt. “Oh, I guess I should’ve known I kind of do look like a stereotypical valley girl-” The sun was beating down onto the small beach. You look past the beach out at the glittering water.  “...Oh! I’m Sam by the way.” You turn your head back to look at him once more. “Cool, I’m y/n. So…what’re you up to?” You suddenly hear the charm of the bells on Marnie’s door jingle. “I’m trying to find clams. They start to show up in the sand this time of year, and they’re my mum’s favorite” You don’t know how you didn’t realize it before, but his arms are covered in wet sand from the elbow down, and his shaggy wolfcut was tied back. “Ah, well uh good luck with that!” You start to walk back to Marnie’s ranch to pick up hay for your chickens. What an odd boy.

2.

It was Friday. Finally. The past week was long. Although the valley was a peaceful place to live, the work was still hard. But at least it's better than that cold stale Joja office.

You strode to the saloon. You weren’t old enough to drink yet, but there's gotta be something else to help you relax. When you enter, you’re hit with a strong scent of alcohol and pizza. You look around. To your left is the local carpenter and her husband dancing to the song that’s playing on the jukebox. It’s spunky and upbeat, but it’s clear that not everyone in the saloon is there to have fun. Hunched over the counter-top with a beer in her hand is Pam. She has her own issues, but you know she means well. When you first moved to the valley, she welcomed you with a pack of double A batteries and a 6 pack of ginger-ale.

You weren’t exactly in the mood to eat anything, but you notice to your right that there's another part of the saloon, it’s a game room. Well that should be fun! Walking towards the other room, you observe there’s a few arcade games, a beat-up sofa, and a pool table with a few people your age at it. As you near the entryway, you spot something. It’s that blonde boy from the other day. What was his name again? …Sam, that’s what it was. God, you swear he looks like a golden retriever. “Hey, can I join you guys? There’s nothing better to do back at the farm right now.” You shout out to the people at the pool table.

There’s a girl with purple hair who looks pretty cool, a dude who looks like he knows his way around a cutting board to say the least, and there's Sam. He notices you, and smiles. “Yeah of course! Want me to teach you how to play? Unless you already know, haha!” How does he always seem so…happy? Such a golden retriever. Sam demonstrates how to play and hands you the cue stick. “It’ll be pretty easy to win against Sebastian.” He laughs and the emo looking boy glares at him, but smiles. Guess his name is Sebastian. You get ready to hit the ball when Sam stops you. “Oh uh, you kind of have to hold the stick further back uhm… here let me show you-” He jogs over and fixes the way you’re holding the cue. His hand brushes over your’s. They were warm and had guitar string dents on his finger tips. “Oh! S-sorry, I didn't mean to uh-” Sam sputters as he lurches backward, trying to busy his hands by fidgeting with them as he turns his head away. You nervously clear your throat. “It’s okay, uhm…” The game room went silent besides the noise coming from the other part of the saloon. You change the subject among the group to clear up the awkwardness. “...Can’t believe it’s already Friday, hah. I could’ve sworn yesterday was Tuesday!” The other kids chuckle, and you continue playing pool.

Later that night when everybody is clearing out of the saloon, Sam catches up to you at the door. “Hey, uhm…sorry about earlier, I didn’t mean to uhm…” He swallows. “You’re uhm… you’re cool and I didn’t mean to make the whole game weird.” Sam looked down at the wooden floor, unable to make eye contact. “No, it’s totally okay, I didn’t think of it as anything weird.” You reassure him, but you know that that's not the full truth. There's a pause in the conversation. The two of you standing in the doorway when you hear Gus, the bartender’s voice from behind the counter. “You two gonna leave, or?” You both apologize and scurry out. As you walk back to your farm, you look back towards Sam. “See you tomorrow?” You shout towards him. He turns back to you and smiles. “Uh, yeah!” You smile back and continue on your way.
