I liked star wars since I was 14. It was on the family TV, with my sister and my dad, at early summer weekend afternoons eating soy sauce flavored fried chicken together. I was suicidal at the time. I didn't know myself that well and I was always a bit confused. I was still coping with the fact that the world is full of injustice. I was in denial of my queerness and disphoria only grew and grew.
Stories were always my coping mechanism. I already liked sci-fi and mythology. I fell in love too easily.
My favorite character was Princess Leia. I loved how sassy and confident she was. I also really liked how she moved and speaked in an unapologetically loud way. I got into the franchise, watched some TV shows. I found out that I grew a liking to female politician characters.
I got into twitter; becuase nobody ever saw Star Wars in Korea, and I wanted to talk about it with other people. It was one of the first ever 'real' fandoms that I got into. Unlike other Korean fandoms, Star Wars fans were relatively highly engaged in politics. I started actually seeing the news, and started to understand baisic distinctions for the first time.
Then I learned about Palestine. And how Disney was selling dreams and candies only to fund death. I felt disgusted-so much that the revolution narratives started to feel shallow. I saw Luke Skywalker's actor endorse Israel. What the actual fuck.
I went to protests and I saw many things. A grogu doll hanging from the bag, a lightsaber(it is a Korean thing to bring glowing objects like candles at night protests), a 'Jedi Labor Union' and an empire flag, etc.
Though the stories were feeling more and more like a cash grab, I gave Andor 2 a try. Then my family subscription ended. I never renewed it. I learnt what BDS is and I didn't want to pay them more than one penny.
Those stories genuinely changed my life. It taught me about the first taste of how revolution narratives felt like, how to write them(both the good and the bad examples), the character and story archetypes I liked, and how to actually use social media.(this led me getting into activism). It was one of the first left leaning media I ever consumed - by that I mean how the morale of the story isn't 'follow rules'. And the root cause of everything, was fucking Disney.
I still love those stories. I am just too tired to pursue more. I don't want to think about how I am choosing to fund a genocide every time I watch a silly popcorn movie.
Anyway, did you know you can actually save money by not buying from zionist companies? Here are the list:
Chevron, Texaco, Caltex, Intel, Dell, Simens, Sodastream, Axa, Carrefour, Remax, and Disney+
