a spree killer is someone who commits two or more murders within a short amount of time in different locations. these killings happen within a time period no longer than 30 days and have little to no 'cooling off' period between each murder. this differentiates them from serial killing, which is described as three or more killings that occur over a time period exceeding 30 days, with a considerate 'cooling off' period between each murder. spree killings can be premeditated or spontaneous.
a prime example of spree murder would be Charles Raymond Starkweather, who, from December 1, 1957, to January 29, 1958, committed 11 murders with his primary weapon being a Winchester Model 1906. Starkweather is mentioned in Billy Joel's song We Didn't Start the Fire and inspired the song Nebraska by Bruce Springsteen. His case was one of the first murder cases to reach widespread national popularity, and it installed a fear into many parents of their children becoming "delinquents," as the media portrayed Starkweather.

most spree killers are male, are 20-40 years old, are motivated by a want for notoriety or fame, and use a firearm as their main weapon. many spree killers suffer from mental health issues, such as depression, anxiety, or psychosis. personality disorders like antisocial personality disorder or narcissistic personality disorder may also play a role in spree killings.
the term "rampage killing" is sometimes used to describe spree murders, but rampage killing can also describe mass murder. mass murder differentiates from spree killing because, in mass murder, there is absolutely no cooling off time between killings, as opposed to in spree murder, where there is very little. mass murder also occurs in only one setting, while spree murders occur in two or more.
spree killing has a significant overlap with the "thrill kill" phenomenon. thrill killing is murder inspired by the sheer excitement of killing. thrill killers are often times sadists who will rape, torture, or degrade their victim before taking their life.
other examples of spree murder are the 2014 isla vista killings and the sandy hook elementary school shooting.

AHHHHHHHHHH IVE BEEN WAITING FOR THIS MY WHOLE LIFE.
The Columbine High School Massacre was a school shooting and attempted bombing that occurred in Littleton, Colorado on April 20th, 1999. The shooting was perpetrated by Eric David Harris and Dylan Bennet Klebold, two seniors at Columbine. It was the deadliest school shooting in the US until 2012 when Adam Lanza perpetrated the SHES shooting, with an initial death count of 13.
Eric David Harris (b. 4/9/81, d. 4/20/99) was born in Wichita, Kansas to Wayne and Katherine Harris, both Colorado natives. His father was a US Airforce transport pilot, which caused the family to move around the country a lot during Eric's childhood. In the July of 1993, his father retired from military service and they settled in Littleton. Eric attended Ken Caryl Middle School, where he met Dylan.
Dylan Bennet Klebold (b. 9/11/81, d. 4/20/99) was born in Lakewood, Colorado to Thomas and Sue Klebold. He moved to Littleton at an unknown time, and attended the Normandy and Governor's Ranch Elementary schools as a child, where he was placed in the CHIPS (Challenging High Intellectual Potential Students) program.
On the Tuesday morning of April 20th, 1999, Harris and Klebold planted two propane bombs set to detonate during the first lunch period, which began at 11:15. They returned home, changed clothes and returned to their school separately. Both of their cars had car bombs.
As Harris pulled into the parking lot, he was stopped by classmate Brooks Brown, who teased him for missing a test and skipping class. Harris said "It doesn't matter anymore. Brooks, I like you now. Get out of here. Go home." Brooks, now feeling disturbed, listens and leaves the school premises.
At 11:19, Rachel Scott and Richard Castaldo were sitting outside of the west entrance of the school. They shot at Scott and Castaldo. Scott was killed instantly when she was shot four times by Harris' carbine. Castaldo was shot 8 times by both boys and was paralyzed below the chest.
They then entered the school and killed 11 others, including 1 teacher. 10 of the deaths occurred in the library.
At 12:05, Eric Harris sat back against a bookshelf and shot himself through the roof of his mouth. Klebold threw a Molotov cocktail after Harris had shot himself, and three minutes later, got down on his knees in front of Harris' body and shot himself in the left temple.
The boys planned their attack for about a year and their main motives were mental illness, revenge against bullies, isolation, and misanthropy. The FBI concluded after the shooting that Harris had ASPD and Klebold had severe depression. It is also theorized that Klebold had SPD.
oh god i could talk about this case for hours
