miners
pyramiden is a coal mining settlement located on spitzbergen. founded by sweden and then sold to ussr. owned by arktikugol. mining ceased in 1998 and the settlement was closed, then the last resident moved out and it became a ghost town. currently is a tourist destination with a working movie theatre and a reopened hotel (which also houses the pyramiden museum)
i see it as a happy thing because compared to most other ghost towns its the most lively one at the moment?
hashima island is a mining island off nagasaki owned by mitsubishi. it was known for its undersea coal mines. history of this place is also a reminder of forced labor of war prisoners. it was closed in 1974 as petroleum replaced coal. travel to hashima was reopened in 2009. a small part of hashima is open for tourists, while the most of it is restricted due to the risky state of architecture
its so upset + angry looking bc war crimes i guess plus the state of it just looks depressing and harsh to me

bonus
iultin... an urban type settlement in chukotka behind the polar circle. it was closed in 1995 due to the lack of profit from mining activities. iultin is very isolated and its HARD to get there by yourself. during the soviet times it was supported by diesel and and steam driven plants. few years after the ussr division it was cut off from any communication = no more heating too. most people left it, but there were residents that refused to leave. you wont find the facts of the sad reality on big sources but on youtube there is a channel of one of iultin residents where he shows the tragedies. people who didnt leave froze to death - a part of the settlement had fires due to people trying to get some heat and the wiring wasnt able to take the pressure (some residents believed this was a sabotage to force them out of iultin)
i mostly focused on the frozen part of its history but i tried to add black burn marks

i will probably do pripyat and mologa next..... i guess
