My stepdad used to dress alternative when he was younger. He claimed that all of his siblings did but his "phase" didn't last long. Unfortunately for me, I got the shorter end of the stick. I've been dressing alt, specifically punk, since 2020.
I was eleven then, in fifth grade and I LOVED emo people. I grew a lot since then but I like to look back on my younger self as a reminder rather than a memory. When everyone called my weirdness a passing thing, when I knew it wasn't. I had my first boyfriend then and he didn't really like my style, but I never changed it. I went through many stages of alternative fashion until I just really stuck with punk and grunge. However, due to my laziness and inability to put effort sometimes, I've been lacking. Id end up usually wearing sweatpants and a band t shirt.
Since then, my stepdad made a comment that made me unusually suspicious. He called me a "poser" for not putting in the effort. I then reminded him that I get overstimulated easily, to which he called we weak.
I just don't get it, why do alt, or former alt people use the term "poser" as a way to shut down certain people in the community. My stepdad is dead set into calling me a poser, which I reminded him that I started headbanging to metal music at four years old, nothing was gunna change my style right now, not even then.
I just don't get it..
