omg! guys... last night i got to be part of a murder mystery party, and it was SO COOL!! \(^-^)/
i had legit never heard of the idea. well, i've heard of it... i should say i legit never heard of it happening in my area, nor would i think it would be a public event that would go well? so this was a once in a lifetime opportunity. and i gotta say, i'm gonna make sure it's a twice+ lifetime opportunity now! it was an event specifically for young adults and was run by a Catholic church near the city, which is how a friend of mine heard. she invited me but wasn't able to make it at the last minute, so i went alone. i don't think anybody rly knew each other prior to the event
we were told to dress 1920s for the theme, and everyone looked so freaking cool. there were like suits and flapper dresses, and the old timey hats and makeup, like wowza. and on the table were folded up pieces of paper with each of our names on em for our characters. for the night i was Cameron McGregor, a quick salesperson making the most out of the economic crisis by selling gin. literally i wish i had my character bio on me... i lost it... but it literally ONLY talked about selling gin. it was like "the entire night, you will do anything to make a sale. you think everyone wants some of your product, your gin is the best" so when the hosts began the event, i just dropped any social anxiety i had and just let the role consume me. i went FULL MERCHANT mode. just going up to people will all kinds of crazy statements, asking people what they like to drink. asking em if they drink while driving, drink while sleeping, i'm comparing gin to breathing and telling people how my father made me drink gin when i was 4 years old, i'm like "100% gin, 100% happy!" i loved the character. we all had name tags, and i gave myself an extra one to a corporate statement like "how can i sell to you today?" the whole event was the perfect excuse for people to break out of their shells. i know i've always seen myself as an actor trying to fit in with the humans. so with the permission of the event, i just totally got the excuse to be myself
i def couldn't help myself from playing detective, bc like... c'mon. it's a mystery! i love those! there was a murderer among us, and at set points in the narrative we were told three of us would die. luckily, i never died. but some important characters did. the billionaire, mysterious girl, and crime gangster had all been killed in various methods. and i'm ngl, people should have acted their deaths better. we were told to go ham, but literally every death was just someone collapsing. if i died, i was PREPARED to start clawing at my throat and limping and muttering last words and everything. but each death came with a collection of evidence, making us point fingers at each other and kind of build factions of who to trust. i ended up becoming good friends with a level headed college professor, sweet old artist, shy pilot, and a recluse bank owner. there was a lot of mingling. each of our character bios came with secrets, relationships, and goals. as in, we were to get "bonus points" if we succeeded in our goal. they weren't really goals, just ways to make the night more fun. most of these goals involved people making a scene by screaming something suspicious to another. my character had only one relationship: Sam Powers, the detective. i was told to avoid him at all costs because he knows how shady my gin business is. and i think this Sam guy had me as a relationship, because he was all over me. my goal was to humiliate him, so i successfully passed around these immature playground rumors about how he doesn't know how to tie his shoes or use the bathroom. the people i hung out with were NOT a fan of Sam either, so it was easy xD
also shoutout to the guy who played Sam for being such a standout character last night. he was MAD FUNNY. he had this loud energy to him that reminds me of Alfred Eggman, aka the "Shadow pissed on my wife" guy. at one point we had collected evidence of a diary page, and everyone's freaking out at the new dead body. and basically everyone broke character when he yelled "WHO'S NAME IS DIARY?!"
i didn't talk with everyone, but there were models and police and railroad conductors, like literally everything was there. after a set amount of time, we all filed votes for the murderer and motive. i honestly put down Sam. and he was the most popular guess! i didn't know what to put down for the motive, so i just wrote "went crazy from lack of gin!" i didn't go too far with the gin gimmick bc i just loved playing detective, but there was this one girl in a red dress who i just happened to constantly pester. everytime i did it, she'd break character. i'd get really clever with it too, like have serious discussions with her over the murder suspects and then just be like "but above all, i think the strongest theory i believe in is... gin tastes really good."
anyway, the murder was... the pilot. :0
!!
i was shocked! she wasn't suspicious at all! sure, her name briefly showed up in some evidence, and it all connected together, but... wow. 3 people had guessed her right out of the 20 or so people there. i can't believe she was one of my biggest connections. personally, i had her cleared. after the game, we introduced our real selves one by one. but tbh, i think we all know each other by our fake names :P a lot of us joined the Catholic church's group chat so we'd know of more upcoming events, so i rly hope to see them all again. everyone stayed to chat for over 2 HOURS! just like that, everyone became friends. i even got the personal phone number of some people there, including a girl i rly connected with... soooo yeah! ^^ haha
what a cool night. i need to find more events like this. and i discovered that making friends as an adult is possible.
