hello! my name is andrew adnd im pretty new to this app, just kind of going through the blog section and brain dumping where ever i feel like it!
i plan to have a doberman as my next service dog prospect, that isnt a very typical choice and i wanted to go into it a bit of detail on why i made that choice!
first off- dobermans have been used as service dogs for many many years and were bred specifically to work FOR humans. not alongside them in a field, or herding for them, but working directly for them. the reason they lost popularity as service dogs was because of their breeding and energy levels, but those are both things i actually want to tie into the dog i get! i plan to get a well bred dog that i will be able to show (as its one of my passions and something i love doing) so for that, naturally, a stable temperament and a mentally and physically well bred dog would be crucial! i also need a dog with the amount of energy a doberman has, the life style i imagine myself havng in the future (aka once i get my license and can drive) is very active, i know already that i will be in the gym every day, going for hikes every day, and going to school full time. i would need a very active dog to keep up with this life style. another thing id like to add is their personality and temperament! dobermans are very goofy, happy, and clingy dogs. they are also very alert and in tune with their handlers, which is something i will highly benefit from and will aid in service dog work!
i know there are a lot of cons, such as their health issues and being prone to reactivity and anxiety, but for me the pros out weigh the cons.
i would also like to note- i will be working with a trainer and will be able to keep the dog even if it washes from being a service dog!
