An honest review of "Komi-San can't communicate"

What's Komi-San can't communicate?
"Komi-san can't communicate" is a slice-of-life anime based on the popular manga,
"Komi can't communicate".
the manga talks about a girl in high school named "Komi Shouko" that, unlike many students her year, is extremely quiet, so quiet, in fact, that she's straight up mute and only speaks sometimes. The main characters of this show are : "Tadano Hitohito", an high school kid that acts as Komi's best friend and also as her first ever friend. "Najimi Osana", another high school kid who's main traits are that their real gender is unclear and that they have thousands of friend, and, of course,  "Komi Shouko", the one that can't communicate. The side characters that appear most often in the anime and manga are honestly so unlikable that I won't even bother listing, you'll probably be worrying more if Komi gets yelled at once by a total stranger than if Ren fucking died in a fire.

Komi can't communicate got it's anime adaptation on the 6th september of 2021, which is quite fitting since most people probably started their school year at the start of september and the anime starts with the beggining of a new school year. It's anime adaptation was published by Netflix, making it one of the few netflix adaptations without sex scenes, and hopefully it stays that way.

What do I think about this anime?
I, personally, found the anime to be rather good, but I'm not gonna lie and say that it was the "best anime I've seen in years" or that I couldn't even "miss an episode" since I missed some episodes out of my own will, however it also isn't the worst thing I've watched, it's kind of a "meh".
I know the message they're trying to spread since they literally repeat it every time at the start of each episode, I just find the anime to be quite unrealistic and even repetitive.

It's unrealistic and repetitive
At the start of the anime, literally everyone simps over Komi, and I get it, she's hot and popular, I get the joke, and it was funny the first time they did it. Maybe the second one too a bit, the tirth one it started losing a bit of that funny energy and from the fourth and forward it just got repetitive. It's like they think you're unable to wrap your head around the fact that "WHAT? MAIN CHARACTER IS POPULAR?" and so they feel the need to repeat it to you at least 3 times in one episode, and it's also quite unrealistic, can someone explain to me how is it possible that since the day she presented herself to school, NO ONE tried socializing with her properly? It took someone waking up in the middle of her talking to herself for someone to finally speak with her in a non "OMG WE LOVE YOU KOMI SAN MARRY ME" way. And also, how fucking hot is Komi San canonically? Like, how many ugly people are there in Japan for literally CROWDS of people to drop what they're doing and follow her around and stalking her like if they were mindless twitch thot simps that just met pokimane irl? she's so canonically hot that she turned thousands of straight people to being lesbian, she can form an extremely big army of people and take over the world, but she instead uses her hot powers to cry over the fact she punched Tadano in a videogame.
and this could even be fine since it's basically a joke, but it's repeated so often it's not even funny anymore, and, if I gotta be honest, this whole thing is what ruined the anime for me, if they removed the whole "oh look, she's so popular thousands of straight people turned lesbian for her and started stalking her" thing, I'd even enjoy it.

Now, of course, this isn't the only unrealistic part of the anime, this was just the annoying part of the anime. A big unrealistic part about it is that she only communicate using text on a textbook, which is very inpractical. If I couldn't speak for a very limited amount of time (for example, if I had my jaw locked for a few weeks) I would probably use a portable blackboard, since you can easily delete and overwrite what you wrote to communicate. Using a pen or a pencil on a notebook to communicate is pretty inpractical for a couple of reasons.
reason n1. you use up a lot of paper, since you'll most likely switch page everytime you need to write something else, and this might lead to you throwing away your science notebook because it was out of pages when all the pages are just filled with words you wrote to talk with people
reason n2 if someone manages to steal your notebook, they'll basically have your search history, except that it's everything you've ever said, which would be a big privacy problem.

and also, another unrealistic thing about this anime is that she never once decided to learn how to use sign language, which is something you'd most probably use in case you were forever kept away from speaking, since it's an extremely fast and reliable way of speaking without talking. You don't need to search for your notebook, and it's also really fast to use, but not including her using sign language I can understand since not all viewers know sign language, therefore you won't need to learn another language just to watch it, but there's also a really easy way of fixing this issue, and it's something they'be used many times throughout the anime, they could've used one of those manga bubbles about the actions they do to tell people that don't understand the language what she's saying, it's used for many things she does, I don't see why it couldn't be used there

The good things
Of course, the anime has some good aspects, the message it's trying to spread is extremely nice and I can realate to it since I'm socially anxious too and find it hard to speak, especially when there's a crowd of people that's listening to me or that might be listening to me. It's main characters are really charming and the theme is interesting, overall it's a pretty good anime and it many times left me wondering what will happen next and if Komi san will ever be able to proeprly communicate. if you ignore the repetetive jokes, you'd probably like it too and I'd reccomend it to you

My final vote
Of course, I liked this anime in many ways, but it's not a must watch, and it's pretty "meh" for me, I'd say it deserves 7.3/10 cookies, could use less simping

That's a really good and well thought-out review. While I think it's good that the show tries to destigmatize social anxiety, it also bothers me that Komi is written to be way too flawless. I know it's supposed to be a comedy and over the top but as someone with social anxiety I was hoping for a little more relatability in some ways. Yes she has great trouble speaking/communicating but it doesn't seem like there are that many consequences for her due to her being such a "goddess." I do think too it's excessive when her perfection gets rubbed in our faces every other episode and she doesn't even need to change/grow or develop that much to be universally admired because she's just so perfect. The animation/art is really pretty and I really like Tadano and Najimi but otherwise, it's not very easy for me to get into it
