Medieval clothes are the epitome of perfection and we‘ve only downgraded since!
When you think of medieval clothes, you probably picture something like what Henry VIII. would wear - and while you are correct, it‘s not what the majority of people in that time would wear.
The commoner clothes are peak. They are superior to current fashion and let me prove it.
(teeny tiny history lesson: Middle Ages are a European phenomenon. It‘s roughly a 1000 years 500 - 1500 A.D. Asia didn‘t really have Middle Ages, their history is divided by dynasties and other concepts. Africa, America and Australia weren‘t affected by European politics that much either. And since we are talking 1000 years, let‘s make it the late middle ages 14th - 15th century)
The material
Medieval garments use natural fibers: wool, hemp, linen. (No cotton, we haven‘t yet discovered America). Those materials are great insulators, they keep your body temperature. That means, in hot weather, they keep you cool and in cold weather they keep you warm.
Depending on the quality and length of the fibers, as well as the twist and weave used, the fabric can be as thin and airy or as thick and sturdy as you desire.
Compared to today‘s plastic fabrics, natural fibers are much less flammable.
The pattern
The sleeves, pants and skirts are almost always long. There is very little skin exposed. You are protected from the sun and from the weather and you don‘t get cold, because the material is great.
There is very little waste while sewing. The patterns often fit perfectly into a rectangle of fabric.
The clothes grow with you. They are loose and you tie them to fit your body perfectly. They can accommodate pregnancy, weight gain or weight loss. The only thing they cannot accommodate is you growing taller, but you stop at around 16 so that should be no problem in the long run.
The fashion
The LAYERING GAME is unmatched. Firstly, you don‘t have winter and summer clothes, you just put on more layers.
You can play around with colours, patterns and lengths.
And if you don‘t want to be wearing skirts all day every day, medieval people had trousers as well, you know...
Moreover the clothes were cinched at the waist, they make great silhouettes.
They were made to last and to be practical. They are the best. And before you come at me and tell me "so wear it if you want" I will let you know that I do. I own several linen garments made by medieval standards and they are my favourite piece of clothing.
Be curious, do the weird stuff!!
XOXO, Rebeka
