ECCOJAMS

Chuck Person's Eccojams Vol. 1 is the name given to the only album released under the project "Chuck Person" made by Daniel Lopatin, better known for his alias Oneohtrix Point Never. It is without a doubt the very genesis of Vaporwave, and its own genre, the Eccojams. The album inspired hundreds of albums to come, and as much as it did in 2010, it still does today. It also inspired the original aesthetics of Vaporwave, most famously through the music video for untitled B4, better known as "nobody here" posted as "sunsetcorp" on 2009.
Eccojams are made from sampling songs, adding tons of reverb, playing with effects, looping and chopping and sometimes noise. This basis is originally enforced with samples of music from the 70s and 80s, with some examples being from the 60s or 90s and (as far as I remember) only two from the 00s. This is part of what constructed the essence of vaporwave, nostalgia. You may recognize this feeling also in arguably the most popular song of the genre, Macintosh Plus' リサフランク420-現代のコンピュー
For the cover and the name of the project, Lopatin took inspiration from the videogame "Ecco The Dolphin". Cute
The very first song under this genre, the first Vaporwave and Eccojams song was "angel", untitled A2 on the album, or just Angel A2. Its music video was published on the same day in July 2009 as "nobody here", just moments before it.
These pieces of music are important not only because of their story and legacy, but because of their power as music. Though mostly made from sampling already existing songs, Lopatin was a very creative and talented man, and with the limited software that is/was GoldWave, he made possible songs as epic and emotional as untitled A2, B4, A7 and B7. Each listener of this album has a different story and different feelings towards the music, but there is a shared feeling of longing and nostalgia in every song.
