My thoughts on the new Tomodachi Life direct

I just watched the UK Nintendo Direct for Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream and I am absolutely blown away. It literally looks like all I've wanted in a sequel to the previous Tomodachi Life (a game I've loved since I was 10).

I have so many thoughts. First of all, I love that characters can now be definitively non-binary and that sexuality is not only an option now but a more in-depth one than I expected. You can make characters straight, gay, bi or even asexual/aromantic (by toggling whether they're attracted to men, women, non-binary people or none of the above).

I guess I was expecting a system like The Sims 4 when it first released where all characters are essentially bi/pansexual, but I was pleasantly surprised to see it as a customisable option. And with such clear wording, not trying to keep it vague, just absolutely unashamedly queer which is exactly what we need right now.

I also am very happy that platonic roommates are now an option. Previously miis would have to be married before they could move into a house together. So I'm thankful that is no longer the case. I do wonder how this affects relationship dynamics though. If I move a couple in together before marriage, is it possible for them to have children before marriage?

The customisation is incredible, not just for people but for BUILDINGS. Incredibly in-depth. The only thing we haven't seen much of that I would like to see is the family dynamics. As far as I remember from the previous game, though it was possible to set miis as related to your 'lookalike', you couldn't really set them as related to each other, leading to some very unfortunate results. I hope the family system makes a bit more sense this time around. With all the in-depth customisation I've seen so far I imagine this has been significantly improved.

Overall, from this Direct, I'm sold. This is all I wanted in a new Tomodachi Life game: the same quirks and fun elements but updated and improved for modern society and hardware.
