deadlock blog #1

alright, i’ve decided i want to blog about my experience as a new(er) deadlock player. why?

i think that for me, deadlock is so simultaneously interesting and novel to me that i really enjoy learning how to play it. it’s my first moba! and on top of that, i’m so inexperienced with a game like this that i come into it with no pre-conceived notions on how good i ‘should’ be, which makes relaxing and learning it much easier. im like a sponge!

one of my hopes for this blog series is that other new or prospective players stumble upon this and are able to connect with my experiences, and not feel so overwhelmed when starting the game. because it is a hard game, especially if you don’t have much experience with MOBAs or team shooters. there’s a lot to learn, which is part of what makes it so fun.

aside from that, i’ll get into today’s games. after like 20 hours fudging around with bots, i finally started queueing with real people. i think street brawl dropping was a nice on-ramp to playing with others. i was really scared because i knew i wasn’t good at the game, and i didn’t want to ruin anyone else’s experience while i was learning the game on a very base level. also, honestly i was scared of getting yelled at lol. i always would hear about how toxic moba players can be, and im not trying to get called slurs while im trying to unwind after work.

good news is i haven’t run into that yet! i haven’t lost a standard, not bot match either as of now (excluding street brawl lol). that’s 3 games total. ive been playing victor bc i really like his design, and i like his play style! i feel comfortable with carry characters bc to my understanding i have to farm and then I get strong and kill everyone at the end. very simple!

i think my biggest struggle is that i don’t really know what I should be doing at any given time. however, I’ve been turning that into strength through one simple trick: i just ask!

I’ve been asking my team what the plan is, or what i should be doing, and then i just do what they say. i think this is nice for a few reasons:

1. it makes everyone think about what they’re doing

2. when i do what they ask, it makes them trust me

3. i know what to do afterward lol

this is super helpful during the mid game especially, because I really struggle with knowing where i should be after laning is over.

but yeah, that’s what i learned! playing with humans is really informative in general, i feel like im a lot better even over these few matches. i can’t wait for the new characters to come out too! im not sure how to end these, i feel like i should have a quirky sign off but i can’t think of anything yet. oh well.

bye bye!
