TLDR: ya it do ^w^
For people who enjoy listening to a intensely mentally ill schizophrenic stoner.... The full sauce:
This is a statement I have many a mixed opinion on. Fiction can and will effect reality this is true! It can make people change or act different, it can make social movements begin and end. BUT there is a sense of, responsibilty, when a user engages with content. This is why content has reccomended age groups and warnings, so you as a reader can asses your ability to handle certain content.
There is harmful fictional content, and there is fictional content depicting harm that isnt harmful. Theres a pretty decent mutually agreed upon point where it crosses the line but ultimately it is up to user and creator discretion. We should not police what people create.
I personally consume and produce a lot of fiction that is self harming to me, and retraumatizing to myself. This is not a brag or gloat, or glorification of mental illness, this is raw truth. I keep that work either private or heavily tagged and posted in the appropriate adult only spaces.
When a creator takes no steps to do such a thing for more heavy topics that is when in my opinion it becomes problematic. Thats when people who are avoiding said content may be exposed nonconsensually :p
I am constantly trying to improve my systems on my website. But to be on the safe side my entire art page of the site comes with a big fat warning just to keep people safe and informed.
But yeah fiction does effect reality doesnt mean that we shouldn't depict what happens in reality. Just means we should communicate clearly, be aware that yes this is fiction, and aknowledge the harm the content is able to cause and be sensible as to how its presented.
Thats my opinion on that phrase. I know it's one that people in spaces adjacent to mine will disagree, People who are "proship", but alas idc. I don't care if you are "pro ship" or "anit ship" get a job lmao. Harm is harm no matter if it's fictional or not. Its how you process it is what matters. An adult can read something like lolita and extrapolate that this is harm and should never be done. Adults are able to read and consume content that is morally corrupt, and know what is right and wrong. Idk I've never read lolita and i don't care to it grosses me out lmao. X3
I am a unmedicated mentally ill weirdo on the internet so take my thoughts with a grain of salt pls
Much love

finally a fellow nuancer... i feel like a lot of people's opinions on the fiction/ship dilemma is often knee-jerk or "side with this opinion so i don't lose friends", when it's really a matter of engaging with the media yourself instead of just consuming it and forming your own opinions on whether or not something being depicted is actually condoning it or raising awareness/shedding light on something that actually happens.
mass shooters don't /become/ mass shooters because they played SCRPG or VTech Rampage or Postal, they just fed into something they were already having issues with instead of managing or coping with it in a way that worked for them. it's just an easy thing to point blame and get mad at instead of holding individuals accountable for their behavior. (that's just one example, at least)
and within that same vein, fiction is oftentimes a reflection of reality itself! it's merely a medium for the creator to express something, even if it's subtle or unintentional. that's why even if you took away the authors behind Lovecraftian mythos or Harry Potter, they'd still be stark reflections of the authors themselves because people write the way they see and process the world.
