Physical media- a gen Z revolution or just overconsumption?
This is a question I asked myself recently while I was looking for a digital camera. I noticed that it has become a trend online. What I noticed though, is that many people just buy it for the aestethic. Another common thing is to decorate it and just use it to post that you have one.
The same narrative is found in Record Players and also CD players. Personally I still use the CD Player from my childhood and I listen to my Dad's old CD- the same goes for my record payer.
What I've noticed online though is that people buy them to put up in their apartements just for show. They buy a bunch of Vinyls and Cds but never actually listen to them or show any interest in music for that matter. It's so performative.
What could have been a nice concept turned out to be a horror of overconsumption. People buy all the quipment, use it once, post it and then throw it away. Not very ethical!
I still do want to mention that if you genuinly enjoy cameras, CD & Record player like me don't let this stop you from enjoying them. I even got a cassette player from a friend for christmas which is super exciting. I also will invest in a camer for my birthday because I''ve wanted one for ages now!
Be mindful about what you buy because of a trend and only follow trends you actually enjoy.
