For my mother's 41st birthday gift this year I wanted to make her a bouquet blanket!
For those of you who don't know, a bouquet blanket is a crochet circle blanket with a flower and leaf trim. "But why is this called a bouquet blanket?" This is because the decorated trim makes the blanket look like a bouquet when pulled from the center.
Here's an example:
(I didn't make this credits go to the og crocheter!)
First, let's start with the materials I used!

For the main color of the blanket I used 3 skeins of Bernat Blanket yarn, Super Bulky, in the color Weight 6, Almond.
For the greenery trim, 1 skein of Bernat Blanked yarn, Super Bulky, Weight 6, in the color Smoky green.
For the flowers, 1 skein Bernat Baby Blanket yarn, Super Bulky, Weight 6, in the color Baby Blue-Green.
Other materials included a 9mm Crochet Hook, Scissors, and a tapestry needle.

I chose the previous yarns for 3 simple reasons. 1, I wanted a soft and comfortable yarn so I wouldn't need to sew a backing onto the blanket. 2, A thicker yarn builds up faster no matter the project. This specific project takes quite a long time to complete with your standard weight 4 yarn. I wanted to speed the process up a bit as I only had 2 weeks to finish this and was unsure of how much time I could dedicate to working on this blanket. 3, My mom liked it! I went with her to choose the yarn and told her that it would be used for her birthday present without giving too many hints.
As for the hook size, I went with a 9mm because the yarn packaging suggesting a 10mm and 8mm so I decided between the two would be sufficient. I also used a wooden hook because it was all that Walmart had in 9mm but I highly suggest NOT using wooden hooks. They're such a pain (imo).
I started working as soon as I got home and have a couple progression pictures to share!

DAY ONE PROGRESS

DAY 2 / FIRST SKEIN FINISHED

DAY 3 PROGRESS (2ND SKEIN? MAYBE? IDK..)

I didn't take progress photos between the last picture and being done with the trim so I will explain the process.
I used mostly all 3 skeins, the leftover yarn was used in the materials image near the top of this entry, I decided it was big enough as I myself could sleep under it well and my mother is only about an inch or two taller than me. After I was done with the main blanket, I decided to add the greener trim. This part of the trim is meant to look like the the leaves of the flowers when pulled from the center. I wanted a more integrated trim than the ones I had seen online. When thinking of ways to incorporate it more into the blanket while not losing the leaf look, I though of doing a ruffle trim. This was quite easy for me to do as I attached my green yarn, did a row of single crochets, then a round of 3 double crochet increase into every single crochet.
It ended up looking like this:

I decided to do roses as the flowers of my bouquet and found a very simple pattern online. I modified it slightly to work with the yarn I had.
ch 10, 1 sc in 3rd ch from hook, 2 sc in 4th ch from hook, and 3 sc in the rest of the chains. Tie off, thread tapestry needle with the end, curl stitches into a rose shape, insert the needle through every layer and tie off with the other end at the bottom.
(Sorry if this is confusing i've never written a patter before lol)
I then attached them and was finished with the blanket!!!
FINISHED PRODUCT

I am so incredibly happy with how this blanket came out!! I gifted it to my mom early (her birthday is feb 1st) and she absolutely adored it as well. Despite being a very time consuming, yarn eating, repetitive project I am completely in love and sososo happy I made this blanket!! I also kind of want to make one for myself.. It's so comfortable.. lol!
