Now I'm moslty gonna be talking Abt emo bc that's the subculture I'm most familiar with but I'll talk abt others to :D
ok so me and some friends were talking abt posers the other day and here is my opinion. I do think that to be a part of subcultures such as emo, goth or punk, you need to listen to the music. Like listening to Billie eilish and Melanie Martinez and wearing a black t-shirt and some eyeliner does not you emo. Listening to suicide boys and lil peep and wearing white foundation doesn't make you goth, and listening to green day and wearing a denim jacket doesn't make you punk. listening to the right music is a major part of being part of a subculture (I'll make a little list of some of my fav bands from each of those subcultures at the end of the blog:D).
Another big thing me and my friends talked about was where you get clothes.(for this one I'm only gonna talk about emo bc its pretty much how I dress :p) Now when you think of emo you prolly think of hot topic rightt away and Ill admit I do shop there, it hard to find cool band shirts anywhere else around me and I get that, but getting all of your clothes there is kinda wack yo. Zumiez is another one of those stores where I admit I do shop there but getting all our stuff there is kinda weird. Definitely make sure there's no local alternative clothing stores near you before you buy stuff from places like hot topic or Zumiez. A way to check for good local spots to get clothes is a local skate shop (if you like skating ofc) you can find some rlly cool tees and probably some cool jeans to. Another really good place to look for good clothes if there's no local shops is a goodwill or local thrift. Goodwill is also a spot for finding really good used CDs!
In conclusion, listen to the right music, dont dress only in fast fashion, and do some research on the fashion of the subculture.

Mo!
To weigh in an the clothing aspect a bit. You can always make things yourself. We think we have to buy things that are already correct, and that's so far from the truth! Even if it's not the 'right' brand or done the 'right' way, having made the effort of creating will be worth far more than having clicked confirm purchase on a website. DIY is such a big part of many subcultures. Even if you're not trying to be apart of one, it's a great skill to have.
I can't believe I didn't mention diy :( personally I make patches and shirts for myself and I love it. thank you for reminding me:D
