Hey chat, as the new year progresses, I want to start a goal of watching a good amount of anime. Now I am not a stranger of it, but I want to become more of a true fan of anime culture. I know anime come in multiple genres like action, romance, comedy, etc. But lowkey I don't have a preference so any show can do. Though I will note longer anime like Naruto, Bleach, or One Piece are not for me (for a starter) just cuz of length. I don't mind something as long as its not way too long. I think something like HXH or Jojo's in length is safe, just not like more than 200 episodes. Also any starter manga recs help as well!! Thank you!! :)

death note is pretty popular as a beginner anime, and the length is pretty digestible. in tems of other good starter animes...it depends on what you like. if you're interested in fighting and stuff, jujutsu kaisen is very popular for a reason, even if i have my issues with it. three seasons out so far and it's about halfway through i believe, not finished like death note if you have issues with that. if you like more slice of life stuff, bocchi the rock is very popular among my friends and i think it's cute, maybe try that out...sports anime is also a very popular genre, i've enjoyed haikyuu and umamusume myself. they're also accessible since yk, sports is an easy premise to understand. personally i like it better than real sports because you get to follow the characters too!

I'm honestly not sure if these are the best recs for beginners, but I recommend Azumanga Daioh and Lucky Star (partially because both are free on YT at the moment, so super easy to access. They have their issues, but are FULL of iconic moments. They introduced me to the slice of life genre and I love them oh so much ^_^
For something with a more profound tone, I recommend Trigun (particularly the 90s anime, cuz that's what I enjoyed the most) The anime has great themes as well as really solid comedy, and if you like wild west movies I bet you'll rlly appreciate the aesthetic. I haven't read the manga, but I heard it's really good too.
Speaking of manga, the manga series I'm enjoying the most (though I'm not done with it,) is Nana. I love how real the characters feel, it just shows the messiness of life and romance so well...
