i was just doomscrolling pinterest and tiktok: the starter pack for people who would be considered "chronically online"?? and after i put my phone down, i notice that i constantly drift myself towards more technology, such as the computer that i am currently typing this on. the issue with society today is that we physically cannot live without our devices. and dont hit me with the bullshit "oh but we need electronics every day for communication purposes and med/sci research!!" LIKE WELL DUH thats not the point that im getting at. >n<
these days for entertainment, no matter what pathway you take to enjoy ur time, you always end up right in front of a bright screen. because of the exponential rise in social media and online platforms [in general] lately, WE as a society have begun to regress in terms of political ideology, ethical values, and overall, just false concepts that we have implemented into our daily lives.
and im not trying to say that i am an outlier of this effect; social media has genuinely changed me in my levels of understanding, while also helping me cope with many of the issues going on within my life. the internet as a whole feels like a drug: it makes you feel euphoria while subconsciously deteriorating the way we act and behave in society.
coming back to the last sentence of the first paragraph, if you exclude the electronic equipment dedicated to helping people, our devices regardless are such a major role in our lives. im not trying to patronize any of the people who (fortunately) have helped humanity, if anything, those people are VERY important within our society. its just that people [like me] are constantly making the same argument without replicating the same actions myself, and i perfectly acknowledge my hypocrisy
if ur reading this (and u happen to be a minor) im willing to bet that youve been using your device for a longer cumulative time than youve been interacting with your own FAMILY (or friends). sources say (CDC) that more than HALF of the teenage population who owns a device has four or more hours of screen time DAILY. and if anyone DARES to try to flex your screen time ("oh mine is 10 hours a day!!") you really arent flexing, it just shows the lack of sociability that the user AND the people around them have /gen
speaking of which, the skyrocket in social media usage has been DIRECTLY linked to mental health issues such as depression, anxiety (due to the lack of communication skills, especially after the quarantine in 2020), and overall loneliness. >~<
what truly sucks are for people like those who are unable to openly interact amongst their peers, a lot of electronic users who go WAY past the recommended limit dont realize that their phones/computers are helping and harming them at the same time.
like sure, for a lot of people, they have online friends who has been supporting them and improving their mental health with kind words. but at the opposite side of the internet spectrum, the constant comparison with online posts/videos with themselves (or other people) DESTROYS a person's self-esteem and overall regard towards how they feel. :(
yall have DEFINITELY heard this one before, but for the people who use sites with scrolling opportunities such as reels, yt shorts, or tiktoks, their attention span is "SUPER LOW". and the thing is, that is COMPLETELY true ! and my evidence is...myself??
when i was younger, i'd say around nine years old, i could EASILY watch or pay attention to super long videos such as movies, episodes, etc. but now, due to my tendencies to doomscroll, ive become so adjusted to little 15-second clips to the point where i find it nerve wracking watching anything over a few minutes long (which is why you’d rarely catch me with anime, only manga since i read super fast).
the generations that are typically associated with this problem are pretty much every generation after gen x (yes, including the middle aged people due to their sudden fixation over ig reels and facebook).
can we do anything? absolutely not. this is a COMPLETELY inevitable situation that everyone will eventually come across sooner or later. im just trying to spread how there are more people who should be concerned and at least ATTEMPT to reduce their attachment to the internet, even if it's by a half-hour difference
