Movie of the Week-- (week 0)

Again, this is me catching up on previous weeks.

Week 0 (pt 2/3) 7/26/2025 -- Fantastic Four

I know there are other movies and comics about the Fantastic Four but I haven't seen/read them and only know a little bit about them. --- Also while writing this review, I have seen it another time after my initial watch, because I have a friend who enjoys it and I wanted to be sure before I talked about what I disliked!

Initially, I really liked this movie, I had seen it a week after two of my friends had so it was hyped up and I did have a great time, but overall I would say this movie is kind of just an average superhero movie. Also, within a few days after seeing it, I had genuinely just forgotten about it, and I also believe most other people did too, because I did't see a lot of people online talking about it longer than a week after they saw it.

WITH RESPECT, I felt like a lot of the characters and relationships between them were kind of not given enough time, especially Sue and Reed. I also think the characters simply did not struggle enough, which kind of further caused the characters to feel a bit bland. I feel like a lot of the obstacles during the movie were overcome too easily, the only character that I didn't see this issue in was the Silver Surfer, who I believe was by far the most interesting character of the movie.

(!!!I say all of this with respect, with absolutely ZERO hate towards any actors or writers, and with the belief that this issue will not be as prominent in future movies of Fantastic Four!!!) -- Going into this movie, I had pretty high expectations for Sue Storm, because I had heard my friend talking about how she was an amazing example of a female character, and I was honestly very disappointed. I first do want to say that I am very happy that Sue is finally being treated with respect, which I understand is a massive step up from her previous portrayals, she isn't fan service or just a weak women character, which is good! However, I would say she is FAR from being a great female character, because I don't think she is a compelling character in the first place. I think Sue and Reed really struggled in terms of writing quality in this movie, they both were a bit bland, and it felt like the writers were scared to give them genuine lasting flaws or issues, and they also just could've been more interesting as characters and as people. It just felt very safe. I also want to bring up that Sue has (I believe) only one or two other reactions with any other female character, and I just think it was a little unfortunate. Literally her only main connections were with men, which IS NOT the only criteria for a good female character, HOWEVER, I think it. would've just helped her character writing just a bit more if they had given her at least one meaningful female relationship. I think allll of this added up kind of does show that just having a powerful female character IS NOT even close to the same thing as having well written female characters.

I thought the visuals were VERY well done, and design wise pretty cool, but not specifically memorable. I felt the same about the music. THE ACTING WAS GREAT THOUGH, and I did genuinely think it was very funny. Unfortunately, I really just think they played it a bit too safe. HOWEVER, I think as they really grow into the series and start playing around more, it will get better, so I am VERY excited for other Fantastic Four movies!!

If you specifically enjoy Fantastic Four, superhero movies, or you have specifically been wanting to see this, I would say you should go for it, because it's enjoyable and not a waste of time, however, I don't think I would go out of my way to recommend this to anyone. --- This might actually change once more content of them comes out though, because I have hope that as more content comes out it will get better and less safe!

I put this movie in the A category, because it was definitely enjoyable, but pretty basic and had some writing flaws in my opinion. I also feel like it did not leave an emotional or lasting affect on audiences, pop culture, or society.
