Forgive my free flyin loose thoughts but my brain is itching for a tirade. In my infinite boredom before the spring semester starts, I was faced with a few movie options. First, Dazed and Confused- a timeless classic that I've seen many times. A gold standard, among other films. But at this point, I can play the entire movie in head practically scene for scene. My second option, Spring Break, a not-so-exciting movie trying to capture a day in the life of kids trying to have the "spring break experience." And third, Everybody Wants Some!!, a movie from 2016 that takes place in the off-campus party house of a 1980 college baseball team. Excluding Dazed and Confused because I've seen it too many times too recently, and it's in its own league of movies in general, I don't have an empirical scale to compare apple and orange movies. Spring Break is great because it was filmed around the same time as the story it is set in, as well as I just enjoy that era's style of cinematography and directing, but on the other hand, Everybody Wants Some!! does a decent job of maintaining historical accuracy with costumes and props and has a more exciting story, though the camera work and writing/dialogue flow doesn't match that of movies filmed in the 70s and 80s. It feels like it's trying too hard to be a movie from 1980. Am I the only one to have this opinion? Stranger Things can be another example of modern film trying too hard. Do you also find the styles of newer movies distracting, especially when they try to emulate older movies? Hopefully I was able to communicate my thoughts effectively.
Thanks for coming to my TedTalk
