my understanding of uniqueness

First I'd like to say;

first of all: If I make mistakes while spelling or with grammar, forgive me English is not my native language, and also with that i am not too good with words so if I seem to be repeating myself, or seem as if I'm not explaining something right forgive me for that too;

second of all: If I misuse terms, or if I seem to be misunderstanding anything, I'd like to be educated on what i have said wrong;

and third of all: Before you throw tomatoes at me at least listen to what I have to say first;

 I know I'm new to knowing and fully understanding the alt cultures and subcultures, but since starting to learn more I have quickly learned a lot. From that i gathered how much uniqueness and non conformity are crucial to the alternative culture, along with a left leaning political stance of course. I am going to be focusing on the non conformity and uniqueness of alt though. This may not be fully true but from what I've heard to be alt is to be non conforming, left leaning, and know about the history and music of the respective subculture you choose to be apart of, and while cretin subcultures like goth and punk have a vary specific look the point of just being yourself while knowing about the subculture still stands. Yet i see so many elitists see someone expressing themselves a bit differently then other people online from that subculture and suddenly they are a poser?

 With that (this is the part where i may get tomatoes thrown at me) I also see a lot of hate for bands that are just.. different. That's it, bands that have no awful allegations, shitty band members, or anything of that sort. Bands like (get your tomatoes ready) Sleep Token, Ghost, and even Twenty One Pilots get hate, just because their music sounds a bit different then what people expect. It's a little confusing for me too, on how much we preach being unique, yet also punish it. Especially when i see that hate coming from other viably alt people, a person who's different hating on something that's slightly more different. I thought we were supposed to not conform to the imaginary boxes society made for us, yet once something that's never even been put in a box, or had a label slapped on it even by the people behind it y'all's brains explode and suddenly boxes and labels matter.

 To wrap this whole stupid rant up, and as a little TLDR all i have to say is; I see so many people preaching uniqueness, yet the second something or someone presents actually unique it's immediately hated on.

Again if i got any fact wrong please don't be afraid to educate, just don't be an asshole about it, 'cause i am still learning everyday 🫡

i think often times people think its okay to be a hater if they are punching up. they stink on the bands u mention Because they are popular. but yeah i also see a ton of "alt" ppl making fun of weird looking alternative people. like the entire point is to be weirdly urself, but i just think ppl like that are alt for the aesthetic and not the values

That's also what i wanted to add! About people just being alt for the aesthetics, and i don't get that either. Why be in a community if you are going to hate on others in your community. all of us are (usually) coming from the same place, not fitting in, and so how does one hate on people who don't fit in when they don't fit in either?? Why divide ourselves, and why don't we come together as a community and not fit in together? Its bull shit and i bet a lot of the older alt people would and probably do look down on us for dividing ourselves further. I can only hope this behavior will change but who knows.

i honestly think its because there is a decline of community and community sprits. so i dont think these people see themselves as a part of a real community other than the fact that they dress in dark colours. they look the part but rnt actually in it. one might call them posers even though that word is often used to gatekeep i feel that in this situation it fits perfectly

The thing about the gatekeeping of subcultures and community's for me is like that one quote from Tyler, The Creator "I like gate keeping, everything is not for everybody" and i couldn't agree more. Since if we don't gate keep from these people, who only want to *look* different and don't really want to participate in these communities to have real connections and to fight for the good of everyone, instead only want to "rebel" against.. i don't know something, I'm not sure what, we *are* going to get more and more people who don't want to be a part of a *community* but just want to *look* different. I hope that makes sense, basically these types of people *are* posers to a degree and i think it's a bit sad that community's are dying out and are harder to find because people just want to be seen as "cooler" "tuffer" "superior" then "normal" or "basic" people.

i totally agree with you on this. like gatekeeping has gotten a bad rep and sometimes its needed to keep posers out, but other times ppl just call ppl posers cause they r newbies or slightly different from the alt "norm", and thats why i think we have to be careful abt the gatekeeping

Real, gatekeep from the genuine posers, and help the ones that are just starting out 🫡
