Constructing a Renaissance Soul
They tell us to "pick a niche." They tell us to specialize. But I refuse to live a monochromatic life.
My goal for 2026 is to become a Polymath: a person of wide-ranging knowledge or learning. Think of Da Vinci or Hypatia. Why limit yourself to just "being smart" or just "being artistic" when you can be both?
"A jack of all trades is a master of none, but oftentimes better than a master of one."
Personally, I am blending the logic of Cybersecurity with the romance of Classic Literature. But your path might be different.
I. CHOOSE YOUR WEAPON (HOBBY IDEAS)
To avoid a stagnant year, I propose you pick one skill from a category that calls to you. Here are some ideas for every type of soul:
-
The Scholar (Intellectual):
Learn a dead language (Latin), study Philosophy, play Chess, explore Genealogy. -
The Creator (Artistic):
Analog photography, Oil painting, Poetry, Pottery, learning the Cello or Piano. -
The Strategist (Modern):
Coding (Python/C++), Investing, Psychology, Poker. -
The Vitalist (Physical):
Fencing, Archery, Pilates, Horse riding, Astronomy (night hikes).
II. THE JANUARY CHALLENGE
Motivation is cheap; discipline is expensive.
I challenge you to pick ONE new skill from the list above. Do not try to master it in a week. Just dedicate 20 minutes a day to it for the rest of January.
By the end of the year, you won't just be older; you will be more interesting.
"Expand your mind until it can no longer return to its original dimensions."
