why has it returnes to the style of the 2000 in 2026?
we wont be talking about nostalgia, but about translation, im gonna teach you how to adapt your Y2K wardrobe without diying in the attempt.
First of all, let's talk about low-rise jeans. I can't be the only one who's noticed this trend making a comeback and loves it, but what exactly is low-rise and where did it come from? the term "low-rise" refers to pants or skirts that hit at the hips, not at the waist as we're used to. Although we might think it's something that emerged in the 2000s, we're wrong; its history is rooted in pop culture and rebellion.
Have you ever heard about ''hip-huggers''? This started in the 60s, although we know that in the Victorian era women wore very high waists, in the 60s, the hippies introduced the hip-huggers. Their intention was to end the normalcy of the former generation.
Icons of pop like Jimi Hendrix and Jim Morrison popularized leather and denim pants, that because it creates a more sexualized and free silhouette.
The true birth of the modern low-rise occurred on the haute couture runways, as we can see from Alexander MacQueen in 1993 presentation of his famous ''Bumster'' pants. McQueen wanted to lengthen the torso line, and this was very very low. Although this caused controversy, it changed the perception of fashion and paved the way for other brands to lower the waistline.
In the 2000s, at the end of the 90s, the low-rise waistline went from the catwalk to the street thanks to figures like Britney Spears who first wore it in her live performances, popularizing the ultra-low rise as the standard for youth.
Why did it return now?
After a decade of high-waisted jeans dominating (mom jeans) the Y2K trend has returned. Between 2024 and 2026, Generation Z embraced it as a form of aesthetic nostalgia. Although today it's combined with wide, comfortable cuts, unlike the skinny jeans of 20 years ago.
fun fact: At that time, the low-rise was a symbol of female empowerment and body freedom, although it generated much criticism for promoting very strict beauty standards.

You’re saying low rise jeans and skirts are cut differently now? THANK YOU omg!! My biggest gripe with them when I was a kid was that they’d dig into my hips to the point I’d get sores ☆o(><;)○
