A New Face to the Public Domain

First post of 2026!! WOO!! How's everyone?? I know it's literally New Year's Day and I'm asking like I haven't posted in years, but this particular New Year's is a bit special for me this time around.. And that's because.... Betty Boop's first appearance/design is now public domain!!! (Along with the cartoon she premiered in, 'Dizzy Dishes'!)

A little history dump from me, but she was in fact a poodle in her very first appearance, more specifically a French poodle. Originally made to be Bimbo the Dog's girlfriend, she slowly started to become more human looking as she appeared in more and more cartoons. Eventually getting her own series entirely!! Still intended to be Bimbo's lover after the (literal) humanization of her. But that was very very short lived from the Hayes Code cracking down on Fleischer's cartoons taking the surreal side of film making and storytelling. Despite the drastic changes she went through from the Hayes Code, she still managed to stay in tact as the classic swinging singing toon.

The Betty Boop we know now is completely different from the one we were introduced to back in 1930, more noodle proportions, crazy curls and a bow on her back! Welcome to the public domain, Ms. Boop!
