Yes, I just dusted off this account for the first time in months just to get that nasty surprise. Spacehey is no longer available in New York. And after a little research, it looks like the culprit is the stupid SAFE For Kids act that was signed into law by Hochul last July.
Don't get me wrong. I know this isn't the Spacehey team's fault. But fuck is it annoying that I now need Opera's VPN just to use my funny little blog, meanwhile actually harmful shit like Roblox and Instagram and Tiktok are all being allowed to exist unfettered. And I know it's not because they're on good terms with the state. It's because they can pay to comply with these laws, and little guys like Spacehey can't!
This is what you do, Hochul! You sign these laws that punish the little guy while the actual root of the issue goes unaffected. Remember your bill from last December that banned the retail sale of puppies? Just because you got the pet stores shut down-which, I will admit as someone who held a job enriching those puppies, was a good step forward-doesn't mean the puppy mills aren't still in operation. And THEN you signed a law heightening the building standards for animal shelters while our animal shelters were already struggling with keeping themselves open at all!
I swear, Hochul, yours are the good intentions that pave the road to Hell!
