WARNING! this is my perspective of twitter uma fans, i dont know if this applies to the majority of people, my perspective is biased and wrong. i know that.
uma fans on twitter are rude, disrespectful, gatekeep, and belittle. there is no reason to be so rude over fictional horse girls, especially when there is a gap between the en and jp fanbase consisting of around 3 1/2 to 4 years. there is so much untranslated content that the global doesnt have access to and gatekeeping it doesnt help anyone.
but i want to start off with, what i call the "agnes controversy"
what the fuck is that? its when newer uma fans will default to calling tachyon "agnes" due to that being the first part of her name, its an easy and harmless mistake most people will make. usually a fandom would combat this with kindness, a little "oh you actually call her tachyon, since she shares that part with agnes digital!" "actually its tachyon!" thats an ideal world, we dont live in that world. we live in "DONT CALL HER AGNES BRO!" "oh my god no way youre calling her agnes" and other rude remarks of that nature.
this is mean, really mean. uma fans have no right to get mad at new fans for not understanding this, most of us dont call people by their last names, most of us arent owned by the same people and have the SAME first name. most people didnt see an issue with calling her agnes until people pointed it out, disrespectfully. if someone rudely tells me something, i might just do the opposite to spite them. be nice
theres also the lore supremacy individuals, who believe that with their whole damn heart its totally fine for them to get mad at people who are going off what THEY told them.
uma fans take it upon themselves to correct global fans on something they dont have access to. many umas have not been revealed in global yet, and people who dont speak jp, cn, kr wont be able to read these pieces of lore. even those who have a translated copy of the game still wont be able to get everything about every uma translated. many rely on what jp players translate and give out to the global fanbase, jokes will catch on quickly, and mischaracterization is simply bound to happen. instead of making threads helping others to understand the character, uma fans will get upset at the person who is unable to access important content. this doesnt fucking help anyone. global fans arent saying these things because they hate an uma, theyre saying these things because thats all they KNOW about an uma. belittling people for the crime of not speaking japanese is ridiculous.
finally i want to speak on careers not being read, this is the games fault.
uma is mobile based and the main function is the career. the career is how one levels up in the game, and sadly there is an incentive to finish the career as quickly as possible to get a better uma. the game works against reading the individual careers of a character.
example: i played digitans career on normal speed because i like her and it felt like forever. i couldnt make quick decisions because i had to read through all of the text and the animations were slower, stopping me from doing the run to the fullest due to my want to understand her character. of course, you can do careers multiple times, but that doesnt ensure a better uma the next time.
the game doesnt harm you for not reading the career. you arent stopped from finishing the career if you play on 4x speed, it isnt like a story based game where there are consequences if you skip the story, it kinda doesnt matter. its like playing the simulated universe in honkai star rail. the main point is to finish a run as quickly as possible to have the chance to get relics, used to improve a character. the simulated and divergent universe are also lore gold mines, that sometimes can become important later (ex. irontomb) but often there is no reason to actually read those lore tidbits. umamusume careers work in a similar way. while people should read these careers, they dont, because its more rewarding to finish an umas career on 4x speed instead. its somewhat reasonable to get upset if someone hasnt read them, but this isnt a story driven hoyoverse game, expect people not to read them.
also, as a final note, uma fans can critique their company. cygames doesnt need glory, their a million dollar company. yes the dark skinned umas are orange and thats gross and we need to talk about why that isnt okay. yes el is a weird nickname for el condor pasa and we need to talk about that. yeah the gacha is kinda unfair, we can talk about that. some of the stories arent the best writing wise, we can talk about that. we can discuss how the animes kinda mislead the watcher into thinking the game is something different. uma is not some the bane of all writing known to man, its a gacha game we can talk about its faults, cygames isnt perfect.
thank you for reading and please, if this topic interests you, talk to me about it!
