How does one keep their hand steady while taking pictures?

Hi!!! My mother recently passed down her old GE X400 camera to me as a late Christmas gift, and I've been loving it! Problem is, I've always sucked at taking steady pictures. It doesn't help that the camera takes a couple seconds for the picture to actually be taken after pressing the button.  Any advice on how to possibly reduce shaky hands when taking pictures?
