Nostalgia Nation

So, for Christmas this year I got the book Nostalgia Nation: The Definitive Chronicle of Growing Up Gen X by John Toma That 80's Dude. I really like the book so far. Now I am not a Gen Xer, I am a Millennial. But my older cousins were Gen Xers, and the book also goes into 90s stuff so I'm good with that. The book talks about a commercial that I remember on t.v. that goes something like Its ten p.m., Do you know where your kids are? I asked my mother if she remembered that at all and she said, "You and your brother were so little at the time I didn't really think about it". I guess we were too little to have that commercial mean anything for us. But I do remember it.

They also talk about in the book playing outside without maybe the video game consoles. I remember playing adult games with my friends. When I say adult. I mean I would play I had a car and a boyfriend and a job at the mall. I also had long fingernails that I would use at the cash register. I remember I had a fake name for my imaginary boyfriend named Seth. I thought that Seth was a super cool guy's name. It's funny I never actually worked at the mall in my adult life. In the book they do talk about game consoles that we use to play like Sega and Nintendo. I wasn't much of a Gamer but, I did play a lot of Donkey Kong and Super Mario.

They also talk about in the book the movies that were popular like Back to the Future, Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure, and The Lost Boys. They also talked about 90s movies like Jurassic Park, The Matrix, Terminator 2, Silence of the Lambs, Seven, and Scream. Man, those were good times when movies were really good. Some good flicks I remember where movies like Fight Club, Reality Bytes, Poison Ivy, Thirteen, Ghost World, and Party Monster

One section was on toys. I remember Tamagotchi very well. I had a Tamagotchi, Giga Pet, and a Nano baby. I also remember Dream Phone. I game where you could call imaginary boys. I remember it being a bright pink cordless telephone. I also remember not really a game per say but a manicure set with a glitter container that I begged my mother to get me for Christmas one year. I also remember board games like Mouse Trap, Operation, Candy Lane, and Chutes and Ladders.

They even have a section on old Halloween. I have watched a lot of old Halloween YouTube videos. Or how things use to be different for Halloween in the 80s and 90s. I remember school parties, classroom decorations, and Scholastic Book Faires. I remember Lisa Frank backpacks and Trapper Keepers. I remember yikes pencils and scented markers. I remember my black JanSport backpack I put a Godsmack patch on. I remember drawing the S that every 90s kid did in school. Halloween use to be a special time where we would be anxious the entire day to go out and go trick or treating. I remember using pillowcases and roller blades to get candy in. I remember the neighborhood being a lot more into decorations during that time and more houses with pumpkins on them. I remember the who whooo of the old ghost hanging dolls. I was once a teenage mutant ninja turtle for Halloween. One year I was an alien queen from outer space. It was a glitter dress in metallic silver.

All in all, I would say it's a good book so far , brings back a lot of childhood memories for me.
