so i saw cloudflare's article on how tiktok is apparently more popular than google so that made me rethink how the future is gonna be. gonna be totally candid here, i do not like tiktok. i don't like the creators. but there's some tiktok creators that i love and they have platforms elsewhere. i dont like the company that's taking every bit of data they can mine and where misinformation gets promoted and reposted by people. oh you watched a video on tiktok where they promote fake science in order to sound smart? guess what, the algorithm is going to show you more and more. and because these are short videos, you probably won't care about it and just keep scrolling. tiktok's gonna get those videos to you either way.
as much as i dislike youtube too, you can see how much creativity is on there. with the short form content that's on tiktok, it's easy to get famous without even doing anything. the internet's really unfair with this. you'd see mr beast doing charity work and mark rober catching scammers with glitter bombs, doing the world a favor but still teens who dance (not even proper dancing) on tiktok for 15 seconds get more attention than them. who cares about donating to #TeamSeas when you can donate to your favorite hot tiktok girl who you're never gonna get but would still give your money to.
let's see the misinformation problem. claims of the coronavirus vaccine making you magnetic, aviation "safety" tricks which can get you killed, crazy conspiracy theorists who suggest that vaccines insert microchips inside your bloodstreams etc. and don't even get me started on how many crypto shills are on there who are harming people with their "advice". saved myself a paragraph or two, watch SomeOrdinaryGamer's video on this. he goes in depth. the thing that really annoys me is the coronavirus misinformation. people are already confused and scared about this and they are taking advantage of this fear for their own 15 seconds of fame.
at last, how it's harming our youth. i'm 17 and i sound like a boomer while saying this. every one of my classmates who have had good attention span did well in school. some of them spend a lot of time on tiktok nowadays. and i kid you not, they cannot stand listening to any stories. i think they developed ADHD from looking at tiktok. their attention span is so small now that i can't even tell a joke without them turning the other way mid-conversation to do something else. and because of their short attention span, they cannot stand listening to the teachers hence they failed in their tests. they were good students before.
I myself never used tiktok, i only watched tiktoks from youtube shorts. but watching tiktok taking over the world in 3 years whereas it took a company like Google 20 years, it's frightening to see how much the youth will be exploited in order to gain more money. Because tiktok made this short form content popular, of course Google is going to follow the money trail. they don't care about anyone's health or well being, they just want to make money off of it. and seeing how the lack of dislike buttons on these apps encourage creators to make more shitty content is getting adopted by youtube, we're not that far off of youtube removing the dislike button altogether.
well, i say the dark ages of the internet is now. we just have to suffer through it until it's over. or until we are used to it so much that it's the new norm and we just have to follow the orders the corporations give to us. i am going to use arch linux for the foreseeable future to protect my privacy and staying safe on the internet. the people who are on here, from what i gather, are nice people who are not willing to give in to corporations and they just want a place for like minded people to get together. spacehey is a reminder on how social medias should be. You send people friend requests, they accept, you become friends and you post on each other's profiles. no unnecessary bullshit going on in the background, no algorithm promoting misinformation, nothing hurting your mental and physical health etc. i love this website and community. thanks to the creators for making it. and to the people who watch content on tiktok, please don't let it affect your life and health. please don't get addicted to it. stay safe. if you've made it this far, thanks for reading. you're awesome.
