I know this is such a non-problem, but whatโs the deal with people (specifically on TikTok) all wanting old tech like Sony digicams, flip phones, and psps and NEVER using them after like a day? Iโve seen countless people buy old handheld consoles just to decorate themโฆ๐ญ I just think itโs crazy that everyoneโs scrambling to get things that theyโre never gonna use. I do have respect for the people who actually buy these things to use them, but thatโs so rare nowadays that itโs stupid even trying to find an actual user of one of these things. I mean, I get the โfantasyโ of being in the 2000s-2010s and using the tech that was used back then, but newer technology is just better and thereโs no arguing with that. Like, would you rather a glitchy iPhone 6 that looks cool, or a sturdy iPhone 16 that can be used for MANY more tasks. Idk like I said in the beginning I know this is really a non-problem but it just pisses me offfffโฆ.
Why are people so OBSESSED with nostalgic devices???

For myself I buy items I can actually use.
The legacy Windows OS can run all my childhood CD ROM games I have held onto since then. Often times emulation or flat out installing the games on modern PCs still have quirks and bugs.
Using CDs, DVDs, and VHS tapes I like for their durability. CDs and DVDs are quire resilient, optical media does not suffer the data loss risk of solid state or hard disc media.
VHS by a long shot is the most volatile since they are very sensitive to humidity and heat but considering I keep them in climate control I think I am good for a bit.
Classic MP3 players are very battery efficient and hard headphone wired which I prefer.
As for people who collect non-function items I guess it makes sense if they are going for a room dรฉcor aesthetic.

ikr?? people love the little "retro" asthetic of these things but only as an asthetic, this fake sense of nostalgia that most people (SPECIALLY on tiktok) never actually experienced firsthand. personally i love 2000s and early 2010s stuff myself, i have a DS, Wii, ps3 and a psp that i use still to this day, it pisses me off that people use these old techs as nothing but an asthetic and not actually using them.
if you really wanna have that fake 2005s/2010s feel of that psp you bought to look cool you'd play games on it instead of decorating it..,,
ik im sounding like an old man but i wish ppl like these would appriciate what they have other than liking them because of the reputation they get on the internet by owning them

A lot of it is really performative aswell. They donโt buy these things to oppose consumerism or actually gain anything out of it, they rather just use it for some cool pictures and to show people just how different they are. At the same time, it spikes the prize for people who want these things for genuine use.
