Here's my 2021 songs/albums of the year! I only really pay attention to kpop releases and my fave (non k or j) artists so this list will be exclusively kpop I'll also talk about western releases I liked. I will also have the links to the songs/albums!
Fave Debuts
Billie had a great debut too though I actually think their debut song is the weakest track off their debut album but omg the rest of the tracks were super strong
Fave solos
Albums/eps of the year
I don't think & is the best Loona mini album it may actually be my least fave but Loona has me in a chokehold < 3.
Songs of they year
This song was fairly divisive upon release I was a bit unsure and honestly believe it's their worst comeback however the song is solid the chorus is the weakest part of the song and i'm still upset about vivi and gowons treatment and I will stay mad. However there are just so many parts of the song that have stuck with me and I do enjoy it.
I needed this song lol it just made me happy during a tough time and it's a really nice summer song.
Noisy bang bang sound make my brain feel fun. It has the same affect as faceshopping has on me. Also I am now a ningning enjoyer <3
God these girls can sing. This song really hits a certain area of my brain.
Ok so I choose my faves with purely with my whole heart and afterschool has my whole heart gripped tightly. After I started ascribing personal meaning to a piece of art or music that's it and that's what happened here. It's about spending those really special and fleeting moments of your youth with people/ a person you love and care for and how all time feels like it stops just for you in that moment and then it's gone but it means so much and will become a treasured memory and oh my god i'm crying right now. Also it's just a cute song about friendship which I love < 3
Honourable mentions for Twice - The feels, Loona - Hula Hoop, Perfume - ポリゴンウェイヴ(Polygon wave) they're bops.
Western Releases
Charli xcx dropped Good ones wish it wasn't so short but i'm still looking foward to her upcoming album. Omg Dawn of chromatica I was also super hype for Rina sawayama, LSDXOXO and shygirl all working on remixes for lady gaga ?? like I went insane, The Replay remix stuck out the most to me and is my favorite.
If anyone ever had an obsession with My little pony:friendship is magic and now are gay as hell and/or enjoy hyperpop y'all gotta check out Vylet pony and their album CUTIEMARKS (and the things that bind us) I've been thinking about mlp a lot recently due to nostalgia and I kind of miss how I felt about that time of my life.
Some fave songs/albums
I know there was a lot of hype surrounding Doja's and Lil nas X's albums I thought they were good but just fine. I also feel similarly about Olivia Rodrigo who absolutely popped off out of seemingly nowhere I thought her album was good and she seems like a very kind and talented person I understand why her music and concepts appeal especially to young people like how I felt about Electra heart when I was 15.
Speaking of Marina I gotta talk about Ancient Dreams in a Modern land. I think I have a lot of mixed feelings about this album? I always look forward to her musical output but I try not set my hopes up too high especially after Love + Fear which was honestly a bit of a disappointing album. In hindsight I was just a Marina fan that just wanted a Froot 2 and was a bit upset at her stage name change. I think my biggest issue with adiml are the lyrics, Marina has always been open about how she feels about womanhood and feminism which is something I've always loved about her music but esp in the song Purge the poison the lyrics are just so? on the nose and so cheesy (though considering her older discog has had some questionable lyrics). Maybe it's just this song in particular because Man's world has a similar feminist message but the lyrics are better imo. Otherwise the era's aesthetic is cute and the music is good and I'm happy Marina is doing what she enjoys.
If you've read this entire re:view than tysm your amazing! esp for dealing w/ my rambling. I'm no music expert at all I just like listening to music and talking about the music I enjoy.
