I worry. I have had no correspondence from mother, nor the usual hailings from the officers telling everyone the news that their Solstice letters had arrived properly. While they've told us the attacks on the supply lines are over; and it's evident based on more rations finally being available, but my gut tells me that the elves aren't so fast to give up.
Last night we got the largest assault on the trenches yet, the elves never stopped flowing over no mans land, and eventually, we ran out of scrolls to fire. Right now we're sitting birds, any second they could lead an assault and we would be dead. But on the other hand, they likely are out of their own kind to throw into the trenches. Honestly, I don't know if I would mind us falling back to a secondary line, the damage our main has sustained is terrible and the longer I go trudging through waist high mud and pulp the more I edge towards joining the rest of the guys with bogbrain.

I overheard some of the men talking about deserting and making way to a starport. I can't blame them, sometimes I look up to the sky and search for parting clouds so I can get a look at the second planet, but I don't think I could desert.
Now I wonder if I should report them or just let them leave.
There's still no movement or attacks from the elven side. I've started to wonder if they really did an all out charge and had all died that day.

It's the third day of silence and the regimental officer just told me that I'm to be the leader of a squad to investigate the enemy trenches. He says he's gotten us heavy plate to do it, but I'm not sure if that'll be enough, based on what I've heard about the elves.
In the eyes of a soldier.
