// gokurakugai spoilers up to chapter 16, word count 1.1k (oops)
first blog post and it's about yoru and jin ophhh yoru.... ohhman i love yoru. does anybody else here love yoru????? where are the gokurakugai readers at. lbr they're not on here and the target audience for this is just me. i still have to get this out of my system because i have over 1k words worth of notes on yoru and jin and i have to use them somehow
disclaimer im a singlet with a slightly above average knowledge of did so if i say something offensive and/or wrong please yell at me in the comments so i can correct it
other disclaimer since yoru (dark eyes) establishes himself as seperate from jin (light eyes) i'm referring to them that way i know other people call them both yoru but the text doesn't support that as much and it's more confusing so ¯\_(´ー`)_/¯
1. what does jin actually call himself?!??!?!!
jin never introduces himself by name once in the entire manga (at the time of writing.... watch me be proved wrong next chapter lmaooo). we know that yoru calls himself yoru and calls jin jin, but would jin call himself jin or yoru???? i wonder if yomi calling them both yoru implies that jin also calls himself yoru or that yoru was the first to meet yomi and yomi doesn't actually know/acknowledge that they're a system OR something in between. i think it would be strange if yomi didn't know, considering that utsuro does. jin also seems to consider yoru's actions as his own ("did i do it again?" upon switching in chapter 14), so i think the former is more likely. still, a concrete answer would be very very nice.
2. how does yoru feel about yomi???!!??!
there's relatively little indicators to yoru's opinions on yomi. they have about five panels worth of interaction in the manga itself, and as far as i know all the extras that could give any additional information either portray jin or are ambiguous as to which alter it actually is. the only thing i think is useful is the dialogue yoru has about yomi just before he disappears in chapter 15. the two things that are the most notable imo are the fact that yoru doesn't use any honorifics for yomi and what he says about what yomi gave him. the only other character he refers to by name is alma (who he calls -kun), which isn't super helpful in discerning whether him not using honorifics is a consistent thing or just a yomi thing, but it's interesting enough to note (to contrast, jin calls yomi -san). as for what yoru actually says about yomi, he says the following: "a safe place. a family to eat dinner with. he gave me everything i wanted, which is why i have to say i've never been happier since dying!" this obviously indicates gratitude (and reveals some interesting things about yoru's motivations which i'm gonna talk about later), but i still don't think it's enough for me to make a confident statement about yoru's opinions on yomi as a person in either direction like i do with jin.
3. which of yoru's motives does he care about the most??!??!??!
we know a lot more about what yoru wants than we do about what jin wants. i'd identify yoru's primary goals as being getting revenge on tao, finding and maintaining a family and protecting jin. unfortunately for me, i'm too autistic about yoru for this to satisfy me, and i want to know what yoru wants THE MOST. specifically, does he value his revenge on tao over jin's wellbeing, or does he see getting revenge on tao as contributing to keeping jin safe? i say this because of chapter 15, where yoru intentionally switches to let tao have a "reunion" with jin. it seems overwhelmingly likely that yoru would know that this would be incredibly stressful for jin, so why would he do it in the first place. my theory was initially that he hoped it would destabilise things enough for yoru to be able to kill tao, but after considering that yoru goes home immediately after they switch again and reading the start of chapter 16 a little closer, i think yoru was 1: just testing his hypothesis that tao couldn't bring herself to attack him and 2: playing with his food, to put an idiom to it. he says that he was "dying to see a certain expression on a certain someone's face", which leads me to believe it's likely that yoru is willing to put his own sadistic joy over jin's own feelings, at least when it comes to this. i think the next meeting between tao and yoru and/or jin will probably resolve this question and i'm super excited for it.
4. how old are they?????????????
this seems like a straightforward thing but jin seems unsure when he tells alma his age and an extra puts them as being '21?' why is there a question mark..... what are you implying here sano......... also jin's speech uses less kanji than yoru's and i wonder if that is implying something too............
bonus: are we gonna get proper yoru + alma interaction?!??!?!?
one of the only matters that we have both alters' perspectives on is alma. jin is the first to meet alma, and they have a pretty sweet interaction, but jin's opinion of him immediately and drastically sours upon seeing him with tao. yoru is the opposite. the little interaction that yoru has with alma is fairly friendly (at least on yoru's side), despite him labelling alma as his and jin's "stand-in". he refers to alma with a friendly honorific and makes sure to "fill him in" on tao's nature before going home. when yoru does get home, he remarks that he needs to thank him and wonders if alma likes meat. if i don't get the yoru and alma meal scene i'm gonna be so mad. i want to see this for a few reasons, but the main one is that yoru only really appears properly in that one scene that spans chapters 14-16. he appears in a few others to say one line, but we only ever get to see yoru being violent. i want to see more of yoru Not being violent, and i think an interaction with alma has the potential to explore that in a really interesting way.
tl;dr there's a lot of gaps in yoru + jin's characterisation and i need them filled before they inevitably die!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! this was not proofread so i apologise for any grammatical errors ..... im so nervous about posting this but tbh nobody's gonna read it so who cares hashtag yolo
