Nostalgia, Japanese Practice, and Seeing If It’s Worth It

As a preface, I grew up in a multilingual home (English, Thai, and Japanese), and lately I've been brushing up on language studies to feel more in line with who I am, so knowing that streaming services such as Disney+ offers multiple languages, I wanted to give it a try!
I’ve always been curious about Disney+, but not curious enough to commit long-term (for now). So I finally decided to do a little experiment: subscribe for one month, explore as much as I could, and see whether the service is actually worth keeping.
I had three specific goals in mind:
-
Use Disney+ as a tool for Japanese language learning
-
Relive the classic Disney content I grew up with
-
See how much I could realistically watch in one month to gauge the subscription’s value
Why I Chose Disney+ for Language Practice

Disney+ offers multiple audio and subtitle options for many titles, including Japanese. That immediately caught my attention.
I’ve been studying Japanese, and using familiar movies or shows is a great way to improve listening skills without getting lost.
Disney films are perfect for this with simple dialogue, clear voice acting, and stories I already know well. Watching in Japanese without subtitles made the process interestingly enjoyable instead of stressful.
Nostalgia Hit Hard

Another major reason for subscribing was pure nostalgia.
Disney+ is packed with the classic movies and shows I loved growing up, such as what I've watched on VHS, in theaters, or cartoons in the morning before school. Getting to revisit those with better picture quality and no hunting around online was honestly worth the subscription fee on its own.
There’s something comforting about going back to old favorites and realizing they still hold up.
How Much Did I Watch in a Month?

More than I expected.
I went in thinking I’d watch a handful of titles, but the library kept pulling me in. Between the language practice and the childhood throwbacks, I ended up watching:
-
Several classic animated films (like Robin Hood, The Jungle Book, A Goofy Movie...)
-
A handful of Pixar favorites (mostly the Toy Story movies)
-
The Simpsons (although I'm disappointed to discover that some episodes were banned)
-
And a few newer releases I’d been curious about.
The month flew by, and I actually felt like I got my money’s worth, especially since I treated it like a challenge to see how far I could stretch the subscription.
Was It Worth It?

For me, yes, but in a very specific way.
Disney+ turned out to be a surprisingly useful tool for language learning, and the nostalgia factor alone gave me hours of pure comfort viewing. As for the value, if you’re someone who will watch at least a few movies or series in a month, it can absolutely be worth the price.
Will I stay subscribed year-round? Well... it's kind of like a good library card, it’s something I can dip back into whenever there’s something new or something nostalgic calling my name.
Final Thoughts

Trying Disney+ for a month was a fun little experiment. Part of it was a language learning project, part was a nostalgia trip, and part cost-value test. I could honestly say I enjoyed it way more than I expected.
If you’re curious about the platform, need a motivating way to practice a language, or just want to relive your childhood for a month, it’s absolutely worth giving it a try.
