Ares: Son of Zeus and Hera
⚔️Ares personified war, representing its necessity and unpredictability.
⚔️It had only a few cults and temples, most of which were located in Sparta. The Spartans saw Ares as the perfect example of what a soldier should be: physically strong, resilient, and skilled in combat.
⚔️Not all Greeks agreed with his devotion, and it is quite fitting that his greatest cult occurred in Sparta, whose greatest opposition came from the Athenians.
Athens and Ares were fierce rivals who were in constant competition.
⚔️Ares represented what many Greeks strove not to be. While Athena was seen as more complete: calm, intelligent, and highly skilled.
⚔️Athena was Zeus's favorite, and the praise heaped upon her clearly affected Ares.
⚔️In the Iliad, Ares accuses his father, Zeus, of favoring Athena, claiming that this is due to the fact that she was physically born from him.
