EMO/SCENE HAIR 4 DUMMIES

EMO/SCENE HAIR 4 DUMMIES

i always see people talk about wanting to have cool hair, but not knowing where to start. so heres everything i wish i knew when i was starting out doing hair like this. this blog is mainly gonna be covering straight hair as thats what im used to working with, but ill also talk a bit about curly hair types :)

(picture not me)

Cutting

emo hair looks alot more complicated than it is. its mainly about layers. this diagram helped me alot.

eyebrows razors work best! ussing scissors is just gonna look weird. cut a ton of short layers around the top of your hair, but keep the inner layers long. DO NOT GO TO A HAIR STYLIST UNLESS THEY SPECIALIZE IN ALTERNATIVE HAIRSTYLES. youre just gonna be let down...

if you have a curly/coily hair type i highly reccomend embracing it instead of straighting it. lots of emos/scene kids pull it off amazingly! examples:

Products/tools

this part is mainly for straight hair

for tools flat iron is a must have for me, i cant live without mine. even if you naturally have straight hair straightening your hair helps a ton. any brush works fine, but for teasing (which ill get into in the styling section) i recommend you get an actual teasing brush cus thats what works best but you can also just use a comb or small brush

REMEMBER HEAT PROTECTION! honestly i forget it half the time...and the heat damage kinda helps...but dont fry your hair off!

for products, if your hair lacks volume i reccomend getting a volume mouse or spray, i find mouses work best for this hair style, adds more texture. for hold and longevity. texture powder and hairspray! i use got2bs powder'full texturizing powder and the classic got2b glued hairspray. generally got2b is kinda the GOAT with hair products. super affordable and works amazingly

an underrated product is matte styling gel. helps a ton with spikes and keeping your bangs in place.

Styling

styling is so subjective, i think its best to just mess around with it till you like it. but here are some techniques that might help

Teasing

teasing is when you bundle your hair up and create tons of knots to support it and create volume. it usually used styles like this. its kinda a tool for shaping and sculpting if that makes sense? i usually spray hairspray all over and tease with a teasing brush and then spray again on the teased part, blow-dry it and brush it out. its also really good for doing extreme hairstyles like peacock hair

Extensions

extensions are used in 90% of times in scene hair. sometimes scene girls actually have a pixie like cut and use extensions to get the length. they let you easily try out new hairstyles/colors on the fly, and lets you do all types of sick stuff to your hair. i remember seeing someone dye their myspace user into their extensions

Heat tools

most popular one is obviously the flat iron. scene/emo hair is all about those sharp edges. heat damage overtime honestly helps me alot with styling my hair. also seen some people use crimping tools which looks sick

Less common scene/emo hairstyles for inspo

here are some unique hairstyles for you to try out :)

and thats everything i could think of! remember to not restrict yourself to the norms of the subculture and have fun with it. its your hair and your self expression!!!! hope this helped <3

My hair is naturally stubbornly wavy, but I straighten the shit out of it anyways and will keep on doing so for as long as I live because I just prefer having straight hair (and having bleached and permanently color treated hair unfortunately means I can't have it permanently relaxed, so it's flat irons, blow dryers with round brushes, and hot combs for me).

I get that you're trying to be supportive and inclusive and all, but I don't think it's fair to discourage people from styling their hair as they might see personally fit. Not everyone has to keep or even accept their natural looks (I for one, don't), you know, and that's okay too.

can I add a tip for curlier hair types? :D

if you color your hair with bleach or any type of dye, MOISTURIZE LIKE CRAZY!!! I dyed my bangs with some temporary hair spray dye thing once and omg my shit felt like a desert it was so dry. idk how different it is with varying brands but moisturize anyway pleaseeee!
this is also a tip for type 4 hair types. if your hair is long enough, its pretty easy to mold your hair into whatever you like because of the way it grows. but I get some people's shrinkage makes it appear short. that's okay! short hair is still a vibe and literally so cute! get a protective style and utilize a hair clip if you'd like to.
ok im done
