Okay, so I was scrolling through TikTok and I stopped on a video of this Chinese girl who is doing a foreign exchange program in America for high school. I'm American so I was wondering what she was gonna talk about in terms a culture shock.
In the video, she stated that she was given the assignment of a 3 page essay by he history teacher, she decided she wanted to impress him with her knowledge and get an even better grade than most of the others in class by writing ten pages. When she turned in her essay and it was graded, her teacher basically failed her because she didn't follow the very simple instructions of write 3 pages about whatever topic they were learning. And she was dead ass confused by this an wondered why.
This girl continued on by saying that teachers in east Asia, and especially China (her words, not mine) would have given her a higher grade because she did the ten pages.
I'm so confused, what do you mean when a teacher on the other side of the planet assigns 3 pages they're expecting more than three pages even though they said to do three pages. If my professor assigned me an essay of 3 pages, and I did ten, he would call me stupid and think I didn't know how to follow basic instructions.
There's some other cultural differences that she talked about like "not feeling like it's a constant competition" which I'm thinking, what do you mean competition? This is school, not a race. You go there to learn and get ready for the workforce, not to compete for something.
I'm so confused, can someone Chinese or east Asian in general explain this to me because as an American, this seems just weird as shit. If my teacher asks me to turn in a three page essay, I am giving them three pages, no more than that.

teachers set max page/word limits because they have dozens of papers to mark. if you can’t present your ideas succinctly within the page limit you probably don’t deserve the pass. idk why people can’t understand that
