Twilight vs TVD

This week, with nothing else to do, I accepted a friend's proposal to debate which of the following works was better, Twilight or The Vampire Diaries, taking into account the cinematic format. I decided to defend my beloved Twilight.

1. Audience Affinity with the Work

Twilight presents a perspective in which the protagonist is tempted to embrace the monstrous side of her romantic interest, bearing in mind that the figure of the vampire is often associated with the rebellious leader, the one who transgresses the standards and conventions imposed by society. Furthermore, taking into account the author's Mormon religious background, there is a reaffirmation of female behavior in the face of commitment to romantic male relationships that are present in our daily lives, bringing the audience closer to the protagonist. The simple, school setting also resonates strongly with the audience's age group, reinforcing their affinity with the work.

And although TVD resembles these aspects, it suffers from a kind of “adultization.” The characters, despite being in high school, behave like irresponsible adults (at least from seasons 1 to 3), even keeping in mind that a teenager close to adulthood would behave this way. these are still behaviors that are far removed from adolescence (they have sex without thinking about the consequences, drink alcohol like water, enter public bars as if they were of legal age, their parents don't care about their children's actions).

2. Credibility

Relating the last argument to vampire life, there are few clues that lead us to relate reality to vampire impulses. What I mean is that there are so many deaths and blood bank robberies and almost no investigation into them.

The 2007 film, on the other hand, constructs a world where there is suspicion surrounding the deaths of the victims of these secular bloodsuckers, but there is a minimally plausible justification. And the protagonist behaves like a young girl, being a bit clumsy, shy, depressed, and naive.

3. Prolongation

Despite the slow pace of both works, Twilight makes it clear who the protagonist falls in love with and has a relationship with, from beginning to end, while TVD suffers from unnecessary prolongation over the course of eight seasons, between 2008 (curiously, one year after the release of the first film in the Twilight saga) and 2017.

Still, I see other even more positive points in TVD, but as I am characterized as the devil's advocate, I don't see many reasons to help the other side.

And you? What is your opinion about?
