This is my first blog Entry!!!
I remember when I was 12, using websites like YouTube or Twitter (X doesn't exist to me) used to be very customizable. I remember when the pre-2013 YT channels used to have no channel banners, but channel backgrounds and interactive channel backgrounds at that. I remember YouTubers used to link their socials and merch with that channel background. I also remember when Twitter had a similar background and a header!
Nowadays, they only have a banner, and that's it. Some social networks don't even have that; they all look the same now. :(
I used the Wayback Machine to re-live them annnd I felt like I was 12 again. I remember when I was 12-13, I had a Twitter account where I could edit the background. I felt... kinda emotional. It felt a wave of... well, it was more of a tsunami of nostalgia as someone who's in their mid 20s now.
Why is this happening?!?
IDK!!! My best guess is that it's a list of things.
1. Rise of smartphones
I think the rise of smartphones and TVs has made it harder for this kind of layout to make sense. They want their products to be more mobile-friendly, and it has resulted in them making it more plain?
2. Change of taste
I think it's a factor worth considering, tastes change, rn I'm seeing a pendulum shift with aesthetics lately. I remember when websites used to be "Ugly" but around 2013, they started to shift to a cleaner and more minimalistic aesthetic. Now, flash forward to now, we are seeing this "Ugly" design making a comeback. because it has more character.
3. user friendliness
I feel like having more complicated layouts made it harder for people to use them.

I do like it and I do think you're right! More users – more things you can sell, by simplifying everything so that any user could just pick it up and engage with it seems like a logical way to broaden ur audience and make more money
I understand it; I just wish that we could express our individuality better. Although it's still very niche, I am seeing more ppl starting to embrace this idea.
thx for commenting, btw <3
