When fashion styles like Mcbling, Scene, Emo, Gyaru, that can be made accessible via deadstock and thrifting become viral or trending it milks out the entire market for items that were outdated and undesired to all but a niche group of people.
I feel that our communities will get many newcomers with rise of y2k styles, especially indie sleaze and the demand was so high that brands like Hollister re-released items that were highly sought after on depop.
I want to acknowledge that December 2024 the rise of affliction many Local scenes were overflooded with newcomers and it became very hectic, men with no show etiquette began going to shows to pick up on girls, in my local scene we had a problem with skaters showing up, waiting for girls and skating in the front yard, and eventually taking unsuspecting girls to their car. Do not be confused with the average show creep, these guys had no idea what was the event and were only there to fetishize alternative women.
I have completely steered clear of "Older brother core" and affliction, however my friends that are not in any scenes are always talking about "emo boys" this is exactly what had happened in December last year before there were tons of clones of these "older brother core" guys that upon asking do not know what they are at a show for or who the band is.
The mainstream objectification and demasculinization of emo guys sickens me to my core, and I am afraid that the emo subculture is next on the commercialization chopping block If "emo boys" continues to be a buzzword. I would never think that men would listen to womens interests when it was a wide opinion that affliction and JNCOS jeans were attractive in December, slowly but surely everyone had that on. I do believe now it is a matter of men competing and impressing eachother, still I want to express my concern in case I am right.
emo and scene guys have been the only ones to help me up in the pit, SOME of the men that dressed in affliction would attempt to kick me in the face when I had been so far from the pit that I was by the merch table, the toxic masculinity in the "older brother core" men was so unreasonable I was relieved when the trend died and they vanished from the scene, I warn my friends that aren't alternative of this type of person 99 perccent of the time I am right and he ends up doing something awful to them.
As of now my general filter when meeting a man for the first time at an event or concert is to stay away from those baggy JNCOS and stick in groups of people in tight jeans, in my personal experience a man that is willing to wear eyeliner and paint his nails and seek music to listen to and curate a playlist, is typically comfortable in himself and does not have to go to shows to crowd kill 5'2 teenagers to feel better about himself, I would absolutely devastated if this evil evil evil genre of man started cosplaying as the nicest people I know.
I used to feel so comfortable in my scene and now not so much,I live in Los Angeles and we have already began to get posers because of the mainstream desire for an "emo boyfriend" it is so sick and gross we have someone in our local scene that is such a perv! and he calls himself a "himbo" brushes off any things people may allege he did, of course no matter how someone dresses they can be bad, but this behavior was affliction guy starts dressing emo continues bad behavior while cosplaying this subculture.
If anyone actually reads this let me know if you will or are upset about this overly consumerist poser archetype popping up in your subculture every few months!

thats so awful 3 men who put on an act to pick up women are so awful especially when emo and scene communities are normally so nice and respectful
they remind me of these alt guys at my school that say they like my outfits when they think im a girl but when i tell them im a guy they call me the f slur or a poser (im trans btw thats probably more of why they are upset lol) (i also dont really dress emo or scene i dont really know what my style is but it's definitely alt)

sometimes i think gatekeeping is bad
and then i read something like this and realize how its actually good to gatekeep
4 real i think we need to gatekeep clothing more than music tho since the musicians work so hard, the scarity and overconsumption of our clothes is what really breaks my heart somethinfg really beautiful ending up in the trash bc an influencer wanted to make an "alternative ootd" and scalping of rare items
