where are the 2010s pop gurls wtf

WHERE the fck are the girls making 2010-eques pop music?

My roommate and I often sit in our living room, hit the penny, yap, do our homework, watch TV, or paint our nails. One of my favorite things about spending time with people is the moments we are able to share current music, fashion pieces, movies, etc. While all are so fun, listening to music is my favorite, quality-time-junky, interaction. I confidently attribute this to being from a city with such a musically inclined culture. Motown has helped me understand the language of music--how it reflects our feelings, mentality, outlook on life, and what it means to us personally.

As we sat on our floor on that November night sharing our favorite songs and artists, I asked her, "Do you dance?" Random question? WRONG! If you are 20-23, you have more than likely known why I asked this specific question. I have partied in Chicago, St. Lucia, New York, New Jersey, Detroit, Atlanta, etc., so I know a party. But when you go to college, finding people who KNOW how to have fun and aren't scared to dance it SPOOKKKY OMFG. Like, if I'm in this club I'm going to have a TIME, and if I don't.....TRUST. Being an '04 baby with all of my friends and cousins who have turned 21 has made it all the better. Summer 2025 owes me NUNTHANG.

When you're in college, though, it's different. If you go out with someone and their friend group doesn't dance, it's like you've been sent a personal invitation to the hottest parts of hell, and it doesn't end until 2AM. BTC I could have just gr**ned out in my room if I knew it was going to be like THIS. It's so hard to find a FUN ASS group of people who aren't TOOOO lit but know how to have a BALL without trying to be too cool, NOT TO MENTION THIS IS MI. AND you have to keep it a little professional this late in college, but still want to have some new fun in early adulthood before it gets like...dead serious lol. To put it short, who you go out with and finding a fun (and safe...for the most part) group, is CRUCIAL in your EARLY 20s.

Personally, I love to hear any music that makes me move, but my favorite club songs sound like Freek-A-Leek by Petey Pablo. IM SURRY like I love a good mini skirt and throw a little 2000s Rihanna and Beyonce in the mix ohhh. The sequence of music on a night I'm going out starts on the slower side with angelic a$$ songs like Butterflies by Tyla, then transitions into more upbeat but chill music by various DJs like Kaytranda and old Calvin Harris, Afro beats, reggaeton, and hellaaa r&b artists, BUT at peak pre-game, a CLASSIC 2010s rap song is being played don't careeee. Clique hits different when you're a pretty princess from D-Town, and so are your friends.

Back to November, though. She replied, "umm...YES." OHHHHH okay so werk. We sat and listened to Judas and I--girl the room SHOOK. Ngl, it took me until 2023 to fully understand that Lady Gaga is the legend she deserves to be recognized as (Kesha too, but we don't have to wake this up rn). While every 2010s and 20s pop and house techno song played, I began to wonder (carrie?), "Whatever happened to pop music?"

Who can we REALLY turn to for a guaranteed banger after banger dance pop album? Of course, I'm going to pay my respects to Katy Perry, Rihanna, Beyonce, Kesha, Gaga, and Taylor (for those who are into that vibe) in the 2010s, but what about now? DUHHH I'm not talking about Ariana, Doja, or any obvious mainstream artist right now. Also, I'm not saying there aren't more artists, and my current music knowledge is up to date, or I'm not forgetting someone! Lowering my social media intake (IG and TikTok) KIND of hindered my pop culture awareness, but I'm not complaining. Now, I'm left wondering, will Tate McRae, Addison Ray, Billie, Zara Larsson, or Pink Pantheress bring classic pop music back? Did it ever leave? Is this whole conversation a recession indicator? HOW MANY LICKS DOES IT TAKE TO GET TO THE CENTER? LIKEEE

In the meantime, I'm going to wait for the new Hunger Games ❤︎

wait! quick question: do you ask Uber drivers to put on what you and your friends want to hear?? I do, but later in the convo (I'm a yapper to someone who is listening), and will DEFINITELY ask on the way back from the club.
