Modern Art Sucks, and Here is Why.

Art now days is just someone throwing paint onto canvases stating, "This represents pain and suffering.", Although it really means nothing and yet they sell it for millions of dollars. This, to be honest makes no sense. People pour heart and soul into a single painting that looks amazing yet it gets no recognition. I feel like as a society we shouldn't be praising the modern turn of art as it has no soul or representation. I absolutely despise these idiotic art pieces. Anyway, I'll update this debate further once I get more free time.

Consider: Art made today is not "modern art", it is contemporary art and the modern art scene lasted from the 1860s to the 1970s. Modern art is defined by "breaking from the norm" of what people expect for art. Vincent Van Gogh's works are post-impressionist, which is a movement that falls into the greater modern art label.

Also consider: If you think art today is just "paint being thrown onto a canvas", you're simply just deciding to look at it through a closed point of view and not bother looking for modern-day artists and going to museums and/or experiencing it for yourself in person. There are artists that still use what is otherwise considered "traditional" mediums, such as marble sculptures, oil painting, and the like. Kent Monkman, a contemporary artist, makes gorgeous, large pieces with acrylic paint that can be compared to 19th century art. I hardly ever see people seek out contemporary artists who appeal to them while complaining about performance pieces and similar.

For the whole money thing, there has always been art in relation to money, rich people just ruin things. There's also the whole consumer culture.

Forgive me, but I believe every statement that is "modern art sucks" always has the same arguments and the like and don't bother to look any further or consume critically. Art has generally become something that is much more complicated than it seems.

You are allowed to not like modern art, I just never really see actual in-depth arguments on why without the same statements about money laundering or "laziness". It always feels so close-minded.

Hey! I understand where you're coming from but I'm not talking about the talented modern art, I am discussing the artist who don't care on what they do and just make a story about a piece they threw together in two seconds, the cash grabbers, you know? I love the modern art style just not the modernization of the modern art. Like the ones they use for big companies with the big body and tiny heads. I feel style is slowly decaying the more we leap into a modern look. Thank you for this comment I really enjoyed reading it and it helped me see other points of veiw, I probably should've went more in depth of what I was discussing.

That's just fine! I apologize if I came off as aggressive or anything like that myself, I get pretty passionate when it comes to art.
