Man’s Best Friend
This album followed up her very big album, Short N’ Sweet, and had some pretty big shoes to fill. Now I haven’t heard that album in full but based off the hits, I can’t say that this album manages to outperform her previous album, but it’s good in its own right.
Now, negatives first, this album is a very strong start, with two hits with Manchild and Tears. These two songs are honestly pretty good, and Manchild is a great album opener. However, the down side to having two of the best songs on the album means having a slow drop off in quality, which is present in this album. However, it’s not a huge drop in quality, but does immediately follow up with a miss for me, being My Man on Willpower. There is a pick up in quality and memorability with Sugar Talking, Nobody’s Son, Never Getting Laid, and When Did You Get Hot?, with the song We Almost Broke Up Last Night, being the only miss in that string of songs. However, the last four songs, with the exception of House Tour are misses, with Goodbye, the ending song being ok, but not enough to land on my liked songs.
With my last real negative, being my expectations with an album called “Man’s Best Friend,” as this album almost BEGS to be more. An album with that title asks to be just, more than a bunch of songs about either liking a guy, or resenting him for fucking you over. Theres a place for that type of music, she’s good at making it, but this album did not ask for it. I expected a sort of album that had just, more to say. I don’t expect a fully political album from Sabrina, it’s not needed from Sabrina Carpenter of all people. But, this album could’ve used for some more straightforward messaging and theming for the Man’s Best Friend title and that album cover to justify itself.
Now for some positives. This album, when it gets going, has some really fun songs. Tears, Manchild, and When Did You Get Hot?, so the hits, are very good and fun songs. Very catchy songs that I have found myself singing to myself before listening to this album. It’s a nice vibe overall, even with the weaker songs having nice enough instrumentals and vocals to justify having on in the background. Sabrina does a good job vocally and doesn’t have any bad performances, just some boring ones.
With that being said, I liked 7/12 of the songs on this album, with three standout hits that I love. So my rating for this album will be 6.5/10
