Why do people believe in god? (serious replies only pls and ty)

12/15/25

Why do people believe in god? does god exist? i have no clue. I feel like i believe in god but why would he let such horrible things happen in the world? if hes so great then why do bad things happen? do people believe in god as like a comfort thing? do people believe in god as a way to not accept accountability? just why? i am genuinly curious because growing up i was not raised around religion. My mom and aunts went to a like religion camps when they were young but never really raised us as religious. My parents are very open-minded to religion and dont really care if one of us became religious. but im so curious about god and everything.

I was raised in a similar way regarding religion and while I do not exactly consider myself religious (it's complicated), I find myself seeking comfort or answers in a fundamental consciousness or force at my worst. Humans don't like the unknown, if we approach something we cannot make sense of, one of several responses is to come up with explanations, which funny enough is kinda why science exists too. The main difference between science and religion from what I understand is that science requires for a statement to be either provable or disprovable (even if temporarily), while religion is primarily dogmatic. You might think, why choose the dogma over the tested and provable/disprovable? Unfortunately there are things neither hard nor soft sciences have clear answers to yet, and there are several complicated states of mind in which dogmatic beliefs might genuinely be what allows one to keep going. Faith is powerful, regardless of it being faith in science, religion, philosophy, or something entirely different. Humans being as different as we are, we all have faiths tailored to ourselves which help us most (though some exceptions that are harmful do exist, but that's another complicated topic). Hell, even the millions of believers of one single religion don't share the exact same faith, values, wordviews, etc either. Even philosophers disagree within the same philosophy, Even scientists. It is unfortunately up to us and those who guide us how we will see the world and make sense of it. Not sure if this was a satisfactory answer, but oh well. Have a good day/night and ignore the fact my grammar sucks despite the words I use

I'm personally atheist, but from what I picked up from people around me, I think they seek comfort in believing something is out there to "safe them" or so.

it's very weird how we exist, but idk about god either, because lots of country's believe in different gods. which makes the idea of god existing. feel weird. like, if god existed why wouldn't all countries be thinking of the same one? the world is very weird. but apparently 'you have to believe in God or you won't go to heaven'
