Alright so before I start I just wanna preface that I do in fact LIKE Fionna and Cake, but this season has been a huge letdown TO ME in many regards. If you haven't watched the season yet, I'd suggest to before continuing to read further. This rant isn't meant to sway any feelings towards the show to others, I felt I needed to write this to air out my feelings, so if you don't like my thoughts, feel free to leave a comment but, please, don't be rude !!
The newest episode as of writing this (S2 Ep8) has been the tipping point as to why I am writing this in the first place. Fionna has been shown to be a character who makes harsh decisions and often those decisions are made with her emotions and friends in mind first and foremost, but the last part of the episode is a masterclass of character assassination. For context, in the episode before this (S2 Ep7), Huntress kills cosmic owl, and with the help of Fionna, they both hide his body in a tree in Finns mind. Because of this, in the next episode, she and Huntress are both whisked away to stand trial for the murder of cosmic owl, leaving cake in charge of the fundraiser to buy back the land of the "sweet spot." If you've seen the episode you'll know cake manages to pull back the fundraiser and earn enough money to fulfill the amount needed to purchase back the spot from Queenie. Now, this is the part I have a problem with. After seeing how well the fundraiser went without her, Fionna makes her way back to the sweet spot, hops into a bulldozer and starts to destroy the spot, which STILL has marshal's and gray's possessions in it.
In NO way before has it been shown Fionna would take out her jealousy on her own friends. YES, she relies heavily on her emotions. YES, she is shown to be a train wreak sometimes. THAT BEING SAID, she has NEVER been shown to be directly malicious or resentful towards her own friends. A major part of her character is her willingness to help other's in need, as direct parallel to Finns heroicness, which she often displays much of herself. Her acting in complete opposition to that feels not like a moment where she purposefully act out of character to show she's not just a female Finn, but more of a excuse for the, rather poor, plot to keep pushing. Again, I do like this show, but I really cant forgive them suddenly butchering Fionna's character for the sake of the plot when there are many, MANY easier ways to have the characters not get the spot yet. For example, maybe have Queenie hire someone to protest against the buying of the land, or hire someone to try and defile Fionna's image so badly she wont be able to legally purchase it from her. Or maybe, just maybe, have Queenie just say NO. None of these options are very satisfying, but they are still leagues better than suddenly throwing Fionna's character in the trash for a lame plot cop-out.
What makes this whole thing even worse is that, the rest of the episode, aside from one moment, is a perfectly great episode. Hell, I'd say it's one of the best ones this season, finally the sweet spot plot is being tied up nicely!! But that one moment for me ruins what could've been a solid 8/10, and brings it down to a 6/10.
