Well… Understanding ≠ excusing
Mental health can explain certain behaviors, but it does not excuse hurting other people.
When someone is struggling with their mental health they might have less patience, less control, more irritability. So yes, you can understand where the behavior comes from. It helps to not judge too fast
BUT… Understanding doesn’t mean allowing
-“But you chose that person”
In relationships, yes you can leave but what about someone who can’t be avoided, like a family member or a parent?
-"But that's literally part of their diagnosis"
I agree, but if the person refuses to do the necessary self-work on their harmful behavior toward others, no one should have to endure it
So i understand why you’re like that,
It still isn’t okay that you treat people like this
Summary: No, your mental illness or personality disorder does not give a free pass to be disrespectful and treating people like sh*t
PS:Me when someone uses their issues as an excuse for treating others poorly but i've been through hell and still choose to be a good person:
